All social media is free anyway, so I don't see your point UK Man
Websites on the other hand are not free, such as this one and it costs around US$ 15 per month to maintain. Hence the PayPal reminder and the ads that now appear.
Comparing social media sites with forums is apples and oranges.

I suppose my point is why do you need to pay to maintain a website to host a forum?
Have you noticed any downturn in traffic since the Ads started?

Because website hosting isn't free and neither is quality forum software.
There are a few forum suites available. We use WoltLab which has a one-off purchase price, others use XenForo which has a similar price and another is Invision Community which is the most expensive with a monthly fee.
Free forum software includes SMF, phpBB, MyBB and a few others, but you still have to pay to host the forum, renew the domain name and maintain ssl security.
Argentina Expats started with SMF (free) back in 2014, but then we migrated to US servers/hosting, registered a new .org domain name and went with a paid software suite.
Forums simply cannot be compared to social media sites for numerous reasons, primarily because a forum tends to be a more premium platform.

Good on you for taking the trouble Splinter. I certainly couldn't be arsed doing it never mind paying for it.
Not too sure I would agree with your last point though.

Splinter , by “premium platform “ do you mean providing security measures as well as not selling members’ personal information?
Precisely.

Nothing is really FREE when it comes to the internet. My input would be, if you like this forum, then it is worth supporting. The ? that is in need of asking, is how many
on this forum are willing to give Splinter support. The ads can be circumvented, the out of pocket money cannot. I am not an expat but I do like this forum and the topics
that are discussed. If Splinter is in need of support, then I will pledge all I can.

I am already used to the ads and don't notice them, I am usually on the forum on desktop. I notice them a little more on mobile.

I'm a member of several forums which I drift in and out of....have done for years. One or two may have some advertising most do not. I haven't the foggiest who operates them or how they are managed financially. All apart from one that is which is run by a magazine. I suspect they earn revenue from companies who have their products mentioned in reviews etc.

Auto-ads have now been switched off as they were ruining the site and we're now on a manual system.
To date, about a month since starting, the ads have generated about $1.50. Hardly stellar and if it doesn't improve, the ads will be cancelled.

My browser switched them off before they even started.

We're going to bring back ads in a reduced form if we can, as it all helps towards forum funding. Please bear with us as we tweak the settings and of course, all feedback would be appreciated.

Who are us?
'Us' are admin.
Anyway, the current set of ads doesn't seem to be that intrusive and I can live with them.
How about everyone else?

I don't have a problem with them . The BBC site even has Ads.
