Those are so lovely — and from a cactus! I don’t know why, but cactus flowers always surprise me.

Thank goodness they didn't come out yesterday! Having said that they usually don't last very long anyway. One full day looking their best then next day they can start drooping. Be interesting to see how they look tomorrow.

What a difference a day makes. Was able to walk about in the garden tonight with the dogs without fear of being struk by lightning. Was even able to take a wee dram and my pipe along.

And your weather is on the upswing. Lucky you!

I've re-potted a couple of Vinca/Periwinkle plants because they looked a bit under the weather and a change of soli is always good for plants. Anyway, according to most gardening sites, they thrive in direct sunshine, but in my case the flowers are shrivelling up. It does get very hot indeed in the patio, so perhaps I should put them somewhere less hot?

What a terrific turnaround! I think you’re right to pay attention to the temperature on the patio. A gardener once told me I should move pots I had sitting on outdoor tile, which absorbs more heat than wood or dirt, and can bake plants from the bottom up.

Yes pots especially plastic ones aren't a good idea in hot sunny environments. Although it really depends on what you're growing in them right enough. As long as you can keep them out of direct sunlight and keep them watered they should recover. Vincas are tough buggers....that flower colour is especially nice.

Can anyone recommend a plant that's tough and will do okay in a pot? Geraniums seem to do the best and they are quite tough.

We have or I should say the wife has too many pot plants in the hard standing areas of the garden. The plants that do best are the ornamental leaf types. They grow easily and happily without pampering and survive several days without watering. Ficus, Fern and Palm types all work well. In fact most of the 'exotic' indoor pot plants you buy in the UK survive well here outside.
In my experience Geraniums, Begonias and suchlike don't work here in pots. They don't like direct sunlight and when kept in shade go leggy.

Night flowering cacti time again.

How gorgeous! Do the flowers fold during the day, then come out again the next night? Or are they a one-night-only phenomenon?

Usually only last the one night Rice. I'll confirm with a pic tomorrow if I remember. My wife said it smelt lovely while I never smelt a thing.

Here you go Rice...24 hours later and it no longer looks too good. It's been like that since this morning.

All the more precious because they appear so briefly.

Terrific! I’ve never grown any from seeds, but would like to. Did you do anything (soak in milk?) to prepare the seeds?

No, I just put a few in a pot of earth and hoped for the best. After about three weeks they started to come up!

You did well. Any news on serafina? IIRC she was going to Italy. I assumed it was for a holiday but maybe I was wrong.

They are now coming along quite nicely, having survived the scorching sun, torrential rain and armies of ants!
