I exchanged money yesterday morning for 317. Then it went up in the afternoon and I wanted to kick myself in the balls. But this morning it was further up (330) and this afternoon even more (333).

I went to my local cueva and they have become quite fussy about dollar bills.
This one is too worn down, this one is stained, this one has a scribble in ink pen, this one has a mark...
What do they have to do will bills? Collect them?

Paraguay is even worse - they won't take anything without the blue strip which is only on the newest bills.
My cueva told me, as well! I am amazed anyway. My cueva suggested I exchange the cara chica and the non-mint bills abroad.
I did a pile of twenties in Uruguay last week.
The USA of course takes all the bills it issues. A great excuse for a vacation?
I wonder if in UY they take the cara chica at the same value as the cara grande and are not concerned about stains, marks, wear & tear.
I don’t really know about Uruguay’s policy, but in Argentina, we have always had to have perfect bills, even before cara chica/cara grande further complicated currency exchange. Each time we return, we have to order new, unused bills from our bank because the slightest tear, smudge, or mark has caused bills to be rejected.
The newer wrinkle seems to be that cuevas will grudgingly accept imperfect bills, but give a lower rate. What’s with that? Doesn’t make sense, if they truly categorize bills with small imperfections as defaced currency.

I think the point is that, if one doesn't want to use official exchanges, then it's their marketplace and their rules.
Its certainly their rules but it is getting quite ridiculous when they reject a note because it has been folded.

On the advice of our cueva, we exchanged a chunk of money this morning at 350 to get rid of those bills that "are not in mint condition". The lady at the cueva said it was a good occasion to exchange those bills. some she didn't take at all because she said her clients won't take them and she gets a pile of unwanted bills that she has to exchange at the mayorista's for less.
She said in UY they aren't fussy about non-mint bills. She wasn't sure about exchanging cara chica in UY, though.

That's the argument of my cueva's lady this morning. One moment it's up there, the next one drops 10 pesos.
Tbh, we didn't need to have much money exchange right now, but when thinking about one month from now, the dollar will hardly be still at 350+, it is likely to have dropped by then. We will be covered for a month.
If it was up to me, I would have exchanged money for 2 months, at least.
