The missus went into a panic this evening. I, thinking something serious had happened, asked her what on earth was going on. While clutching a bundle of folders she said two property deeds were missing. So what, there must be digital copies I replied.....seems no such things exist here. If so then one wonders why?

I asked Adri about this and you're correct. However, you can get certified copies from the land registry. There's a top firm in BA that specialises in this and they are highly recommended.

I took a course a couple of years ago where the instructions told the story of a colleague whose house in California burned down because of the wood fires. She lost all of her deeds, property, computer with decades worth of work.

Since then, she keeps those irreplaceable records in a safe at a bank, including a hard drive with a backup of her work. It seems a little extreme but in retrospective it could have been a lifesaver.

I keep a backup hard disk connected to my computer, we have digitalized all deeds and IDs and important records and we also keep a copy on an encrypted cloud. It is also useful when we are out and are asked for some information contained in such documents, which we can pop immediately from our phones.

It is worth considering scanning all these records and store them somewhere safe.

One would think so. Knowing how things work here though I just wonder if those in authority would accept them? I still remember the rigmarole we had to go through just to get ruddy married!! ^^

They wouldn't be legally valid, but at least it would be easier to retrive their copy somewhere.
