  • I don't mind painting and decorating and done the whole house when we moved over. Had started doing it all over again a few months ago but the entrance hall side wall was soaking with dampness. Turned out to be a water pipe inside the wall which goes to the garden had a leak. We have a good plumber who has all the gear to expose and repair it....something I would never do as I don't have the gear or the knowledge. He came and repaired inside an hour. Trouble with these old houses is the way the…
  • (Quote from JAN)Well if the cleaning of the filters doesn't make it work I can't be arsed doing all that. Guess we might be giving Fabio the aircon man a call.
  • (Quote from JAN)Far too complicated Jan...I have better things to do with my time. And anyway....if I do it once the missus will expect me to do all the time.
  • (Quote from UK Man)Due to the heatwave that's coming I finally got around to doing this job. Spent more ruddy time getting the cover to lift up than it took to take out the filters, clean them and put them back in. Now belting out cold air again.....and the wife thinks I'm a clever clogs.
  • (Quote from serafina)I don't even think I'd attempt removing it just incase I couldn't put it back in. The videos I watched on how to lift the front cover to take the filter screens out made it look so easy. In reality it wasn't as ours doesn't have quick release clips. I had to press the sides in and exert a lot of force in order for the cover to lift up.....it's designed for someone with three hands.
  • (Quote from JAN)OK Jan stop harping on about the bloody blower wheel....you're beginning to annoy me. I won't be taking it out but will have a look and see if it needs cleaned.
  • (Quote from JAN)Yeah and she'll send you the bill if she has to call someone in to put it back together again.
  • (Quote from JAN)Indeed....passing the buck is one advantage of living here.
  • Yup....lots of men in black. Tons of work to be had....during siesta time and weekends especially.
  • (Quote from Mateo)In the UK it's got to the stage new appliances are so cheap and reliable you just chuck 'em away when they break down. It's cheaper just to buy a new one. Here on the other hand you pay over the odds for any appliance.
  • (Quote from JAN)What's a ''cloak'' problem? We've had water problems galore this summer due to low mains water pressure. So much so I told the wife not to pay the water bill.
  • (Quote from GlasgowJohn)Oh right....need to remember that one wee man.
  • Yes we've also had an invasion of cockroaches recently. The ants have still to appear thankfully. The wife puts down some sort of pesticide gel stuff on the floor at each corner of the kitchen/living room - the rooms that seem to be affected the most. They eat the stuff which makes them drowsy then the the dogs finish them off.
  • Yep it makes a difference. Our living room badly needs done as does the entrance hall which I had to stop preparing due to a burst pipe in the brick wall. Weeks after the plumber fixed it and it's still a touch damp so no point starting it until I know for sure it won't be a waste of time. Which brand of paint do you use Splinter? The wife won't buy anything else other than ALBA.
  • (Quote from Rice)I can't see me trying it....guaranteed to end up with a tin of grey paint.
  • Never use tape as I have a very steady hand. I actually find doing that part of it quite satisfying. When we had Christian the painter painting out at the countryside place he had blue tape everywhere....the missus was always having to buy new rolls of it.
  • (Quote from serafina)Strangely enough I never ever saw a ''professional'' painter in the UK using masking tape when painting around door frames either. They never made a mess and if they did they would clean it immediately before it dried. I suspect the ones you have had weren't as professional as they said they were.
  • (Quote from Rice)No painter and decorator in the UK would work without dust sheets. With most houses having carpets they have to.
  • (Quote from serafina)Wonder whose bright idea that colour scheme was?
  • (Quote from Rice)I don't like the prep either especially in an old house with dodgy walls. I do like the painting side of it although ceilings can be a pain if you have to use a brush. As for mess....I rarely make any. That's why I won't let the wife do it.
