If this person has a penis , they should be playing men's football . If not someone will have to make new rules.
I don’t know anything about soccer, but I didn’t think the players were allowed to hit the ball with anything but heads and feet.

What’s to explain? Nowhere near as hard to understand as “gradual devaluation!”

Watch out for the bone saws.

Testament to what can be achieved with £2 billion, a manager with an offshore account, a suspended 2-year ban from European competition and 115 charges of financial irregularity.
That’s all it takes? Sounds like a business model for all the other clubs!

A high compliment indeed to Rory Stewart, bebopalula . I’m looking forward to “The Long History of Argument.” Thanks!
Back to the Lineker-BBC controversy —
Here’s The Guardian’s perspective from March 13.

My now-favorite British podcast duo, in a very interesting interview with Gary Lineker. He seems like a very kind, unassuming, nice guy.

This article about the 1978 World Cup in Argentina is really worth a read.
The 2018 article is both well written and weighty. It filled me with such great sadness. If anyone has not yet toured the Navy Petty Officers School of Mechanics, I encourage you to spend half a day there.

What a tease, GlasgowJohn -

It seems especially sad that it is a heart condition, not personal riches or loss of athletic ability, that is causing him to leave a sport he clearly loves.

Reported by the NYT tonight:
In other soccer news, Lionel Messi, who led Argentina to victory in the Copa América in Brazil over the weekend, may not be able to return to F.C. Barcelona, the only professional home he has known.
The club’s dire financial straits and a series of decisions by team management — including the one to let Messi’s contract expire — have imperiled his future there. Barcelona must cut about $240 million from its wage bill this summer in order to register any new players, including Messi.

… In some ways, Southgate was hamstrung into playing Rice and Phillips, two defensive midfielders, because box-to-box options are lacking. Not knocking those players, both did well enough, but….
I can’t speak for Phillips, but I know I played my best.

Tragic. In sports and in politics, people seem to be turning to violence to settle their differences.
Will the 21st century be known as a turn towards barbarism?

You just have to love those agonized writhing displays. A real art form.

This is magnificent! I wanted to read about it, and saw this in the Telegraph;
“When the lion jumps onto the pitch patches of turf erupt into 'flames' where the lion's feet touch the grass.
Moments later the lion rears up onto its hind legs, swings its claws and gives one final roar before it is engulfed in flames and disappears as beams of light dissipate in the air.”
Edit: just found the ending footage on YouTube! -
