Finally watched Rita, a Danish series centered around a free spirit who seems to be much more successful with the students she teaches, than she is in managing her own relationships.

Seasons 1-3 are outstanding; 4 is a stinker, but 5 partially regains the energy of the first three. Definitely enjoyed it.

You're the first person I know who also watched this series. Seasons 1-3 were phenomenal, and Season 4 and 5 I tried the first few episodes of each and couldn't get into them. Definitely two thumbs up for the first three seasons.

I was just in the USA and was awed by how when I used paper towels, they didn't crumble after the first nanosecond of use. They were thiiiiick.

Question - any recommendation for a high-quality paper towel brand in Argentina? I'm looking to upgrade to the next level of paper towelness.

    Obrigado :)

So! Our beloved Nanny of many years needs to return to the USA for family reasons. We are seeking a replacement - and you have a high bar to live up to!

We’re a loving, traditional-ish, American-Argie young family, the cheesy sort who sit around and put on plays (just for ourselves) of our favorite books. Just tonight, for example - to give you a sense of our family’s style - we all did an impromptu re-enactment of Yertle The Turtle, our kids’ favorite Dr Seuss book, starring the kids (3 and 5): one as Yertle and the other as Mack.

The requirements are mostly self-evident and straightforward (you need to love little kids etc) but, importantly, we are looking for an American or native English speaker. This is to help ensure our kids grow up speaking English at the native level.

Job is half time or possibly more. And at the Belgrano/Nuñez border, just off Cabildo, and right by the Congreso de Tucuman subte. And hopefully long-term!

    Sound interesting? Say hi!

EJLarson — this is this restaurant that’s at the end of a dock (or dock-like platform) on the river, the restaurant that you pass every time you take the Costanera to Aeroparque, you pass it on that road just minutes before arriving at AEP

I think the explanation is very different. She has a veeeery clear sense of the exchange rate now - they were just visiting NY a week ago.

The reason is this: argies treat dollars and pesos differently - even when the exchange rates are accounted for. When something is in pesos, they are, well, argies: being the cheapest people anywhere even knowing their cheapness comes with a requisite decline in value of what they’re buying. But when they go to the US and use dollars, they think more like Americans and use American standards. That’s why 100 pesos is expensive but 4 dollars is cheap.

I’m brainstorming a possible product subscription idea that a friend may pursue, aimed at Argentines... and we’re considering a subscription of 100 pesos a month. One Argie I asked if she would pay this said: “I wouldn’t pay 100 pesos a month for this because that feels expensive, but I would pay 4 dollars a month for this since that feels cheap.”

    Ummmm.....

In bizarro Argentina logic, that makes sense.

What I like about this story is how clearly it elucidates what goes on in the Argie’s mind as they come to their weird conclusions on things.

(For future reference of people in 5 years who stumble upon this post: the peso is current 25 to the dollar.......)

SO ben and serafina - thanks for your responses.

I did some research and came to the opposite conclusion, and I'm going to get the papers I need notarized via NotaryCam: https://www.notarycam.com -- and I already confirmed that the entity I need to give the notarized paper to accepts NotaryCam so voila, problem solved.

What's the solution, specifically? NotaryCam just does a live video conference between you and a notary. You hold up your ID so they confirm its you, and they watch you digitally sign it. Bam. Just like a cam girl but instead of xxxx-ing together, you're doing a hot notarizing session together.

You may be wondering, "How is this legal?" and the answer is.... all of the notaries who work for NotaryCam are Virginia notaries. ANd guess what? Virginia passed a law a few years ago, allowing Virginia notaries to notarize papers via webcams. Boom! Read more: https://www.notarycam.com/legal/

Bam. Next time you need a notary, you can do it in your underwear. THank me by inviting me for a drink ;)

serafina said, "It happened to me to read 'aggressive' people on forums who were quite agreeable in person. It is not a general rule, but there are more social filters in place in real life conversation and we have those filter in place also on this forum, as a consequence."

--> Yes, exactly: a mark of a deceitful person is that they are nice to your face but become an asshole when they no longer need to look you in the eye. Someone who is nice in person but suddenly becomes an asshole online: it's ALWAYS the case that they're an asshole but are just too scared/timid/shy to be an asshole to you WHILE LOOKING YOU IN THE EYE, so instead, they'll be an asshole to you while whimpering behind their computer screen.

serafina - we haven't met yet but I've met a bunch of others. It will probably happen sometime, some place, somewhere, somehow, something.

ben -- you would only be the person being referred to in this thread I started only if you are, to use @EJLarson's words, "the chilly advocate". Are you a lawyer? I didn't think so!

Splinter -- "I agree about NOT deleting posts, otherwise we become a Stalinesque regime." I think you have a funny definition of "Stalinesque." I do agree that, for example, should you decide to start sending a few million peasants you round up to labor camps and then to their deaths -- then that would be "Stalinesque." Ha. I hope you're not planning on doing that ;)

Also Splinter -- "In fact, the only post that have been deleted so far are the spam posts." ---> Ay, there's the rub! It all comes down to your subjective (dictatorial!) definition of the word "spam." For example, I would say that the "the chilly advocate's" posts [on the other forum] are PURE SPAM. Trolling is just a very aggressive and obnoxious and invasive (and sometimes fatal) version of spam. And he's trolling.

So, actually, I think we do fully agree on one key point: that we should delete all spam :) Now, let's just define spam....

Splinter -- as a purely theoretical matter, I think that if anyone like "the chilly advocate" (to use @EJLarson's phrase) were to troll here like he does on [unnamed other forum], we should DEFINITELY ban him. If we don't, then *we will be identical to the other forum*, and thus lose what makes us distinctive, special, unique. Said more clearly: what's awesome about this forum is the LACK of idiots spouting BS to destroy every thread and turn every thread into another idiotic political discourse in which the intellectual level of the discourse is about that of a 6 year old. If we turn into that, too, then I may as well go back to the other forum - we'll stop being better.

An ideological commitment to freedom of speech will turn this space into a shithole like [the other forum], if we ever grow. What we need, and what the other lacks, is QUALITY CONTROL. But quality control based on a set of clearly articulated, and consistent principles. (The difference between democracy and dictatorship isn't total freedom or not; it's whether there are publicly known rules, and their consistent enforcement.) I would not only urge us to have that and follow that -- but among the rules should be, no idiotic flame wars, of the type that have killed [the other forum].

Here's a metaphor. Imagine situation [a]: 9 people in a party, having a nice, calm, "tranki", enjoyable conversation. Now compare that to situation [b]: the same 9 people trying to have a conversation, but now there's a tenth person who comes in and literally every second in the party throws shit at everyone. He comes up to one guy in the party, reaches into his ass hole, and with a pile of shit now on his hands, throws it at one of the 9 people. Then he goes to the next person, and does the same again. Again, again, and again. Which party would you rather be at?

Hey! Anyone happen to know a US Notary in BA? I know there's one at the embassy but it's always a disaster going there so I'm trying to avoid it. Thank you :)

I’ll take that as a no!

...the assholes on “a certain other nameless forum” from whom loins our forum was sprung — that certain over-active participants there who are world class trolls and turn every thread into truly idiotic never-ending wars.... people who have he combination of being wrong in every single issue and won’t stop talking about those issues.... that those assholes haven’t discovered our forum. Their absence keeps keeps the level of discourse here at non-idiotic levels. Thank you everyone.
