Thanks guys, I finally managed to get someone to confirm this to me on the VW side. I do miss buying a car in the UK, it's like running a gauntlet here lol.

Next fun bit is getting my Argentine licence!

So the misses and I have decided on a 0km VW Tera. My next question is regarding patente, which word on the grapevine is that they are reducing next month here in Buenos Aires(Provincia)...

Con este rediseño del impuesto automotor, PBA apuesta a descomprimir una de las cargas más cuestionadas por los contribuyentes.

If I bought the car this month would I only pay for the final month of this years(extortionate) patente, pro rata, and then start afresh in March with the new rates?

Or would I have to pay for the whole year at 2025 prices?

So I finally got my hands on my DNI, and now to buy a car. I'm looking a a year or two old Toyota Yaris but the question will obviously apply to any.

In the UK when you buy secondhand you drive away with the car the same day, with the seller giving you the new keeper slip from the V5C(logbook for our US brethren).

My understanding here is you have to have the car transferred before you can take it away, but I'm not entirely sure how it all works. Maybe if someone here can shed some light on things that would be great?

I'm not sure but would have hoped so. Let's see though as it appears to be deeply unpopular.

Totally unnecessary and is just more invasion in peoples lives. Reeves at the ready to up taxes to pay for it all, then enjoy the money rolling in selling people's personal information like they did with the NHS app. With this, the online safety act and muting of the government having access to your bank account without a court order to do as they see fit we are racing to get to 1984.

Indeed as well as car number plate recognition. Having said that only about half of them actually work here. ^^

And many just don't bother with plates at all

This reminds me that I need a money counting machine!

My take, exactly. Current upper limit is at 1400, which is very close. I have been away for over a month and I don't have a fresh take on street prices. However, my university tuition and health insurance kept going up (5-10% per month), regardless.

I am currently in Romania and it is a steal compared to Italy, let alone compared to Argentina.

It's 1450 now I think with the percentage increase, but things are still going up more than the exchange rate and even inflation with some items. Other things have gotten slightly cheaper due to falling demand but minoristas are still trying to push high margins on their products. Its a mess, like all of my six years here except its a drastically more expensive mess at the moment.

After spotting a decent price for some British pipe tobacco from a chap in Tigre I decided to place an order. He wasted no time in packaging it and posting it to me on the 7th of April issuing me with a tracking number. Now over a week later and here's the latest update....doesn't seem to have moved for the last four days.

Official bank rate , from the central Bank

    Blue down to 1305

More manipulation then i think as the central bank raised it from 1107 at the end of play Friday to possibly stem the sell off of pesos. Without this it has appreciated 7.5% in many of the financial pages online.

All very confusing but I suspect this is by design. I just got 1200 from a local cambio about an hour ago.

They actually announced that the dollar will be free to move *within the 1000 to 1400* range. Which is not 100% free. They further stated that it may reach the top limit (1400) in given scenarios.
There is a crawling peg of 1%.

Este esquema permite que el tipo de cambio oficial mayorista fluctúe libremente dentro de una franja que va de $1.000 a $1.400 por dólar, con una actualización mensual del 1% en cada extremo.

With inflation again going the wrong way(3.7% last month) and many prices rising above that we'll see how long this 1% pegging action goes. My bet is they throw money at it until after the elections and then who knows.

I definitely don’t understand the ins and outs but if the goal is that all rates reach parity thereby making the Blue redundant, then as far as I’m concerned that must involve ongoing manipulation and jiggery-pokery.

This money will be blown on flooding the market with dollars to keep the peso value down and overinflated. Just seems more of the same really.

    Quote from GlasgowJohn

I reckon they feel the USD is worth around 1400 pesos. That would be their idea of it's true value.

And everything is calculated to work at that rate.

They seem to feel they can meet their obligations and USD investments will pile in after Easter.

Maybe, although foreign investment could still be a struggle if it looks like the peso is overpriced. It's basically what has kept them away up until now. We'll see though.

If we do settle on 1400 and the blue is done away with everything will go up in price here minimum 20 odd percent inline with the difference, meaning everything goes up again in dollar/pound terms by that margin. Dollar inflation has been huge in the last 12 to 18 months and this will only exasperate the situation.

the nine SUVs that are under 30 million pesos

    1. Citroën Basalt, con precios entre los $23.760.000 y los $31.190.000.
    2. Citroën C3 Aircross, de $27.580.000 hasta $32.810.000.
    3. Fiat Pulse, entre los $27.610.000 y $34.046.000.
    4. Renault Stepway, entre los $27.710.000 y $28.740.000.
    5. Chevrolet Spin, entre $28.057.900 y $34.033.900.
    6. Chevrolet Tracker, entre $28.393.900 y $36.864.900.
    7. Nissan Kicks, entre los $28.547.500 y los $37.885.000.
    8. Citroën C4 Cactus, entre $29.310.000 y $32.280.000.
    9. Renault Kardian, entre $28.390.000 y $33.990.000.

I've seen the VW T-cross slip under $30m for the ronseal model.

This site is what I have found to be the best guide of price at any one moment according to Argentine redditors:

elcerokm.com | Comprá online tu próximo auto 0km.
Comprá tu auto 0km online sin moverte de tu casa.
    elcerokm.com

Also gives you the link to the dealer with the price and availability of the differing models.

Quite a bit more to choose from if one throws a few more shekles into the bargain though, and £20k for a new motor isn't too bad. Even if it has a Renault or Shitroën badge on the front.

So can anyone let me know how the insurance works here? I'm guessing fully comp but do you get a no claims discount or anything like that with each year?
