But how to combat their omnipotent venality?

I agree with you, Semigoodlooking . This forum doesn’t seem to be a fit for the topic, especially as an introductory post, perhaps meant as a wedge issue?
But I’ll play along as well. Wikipedia defines ethnicity thus:An ethnic group or ethnicity is a category of people who identify with each other, usually on the basis of presumed similarities such as a common language, ancestry, history, society, culture, nation, religion, race or social treatment within their residing area.

The NY Times breaks down the reasons why the US is #1 on all the covid-19 charts:
America stands alone
Nearly every country has struggled to contain the coronavirus. But only one affluent nation has suffered a severe, sustained outbreak for more than four months: the United States.
Our colleague David Leonhardt — the usual writer of this newsletter — and a team of other Times journalists around the world interviewed scientists and public health experts to reconstruct America’s unique failure. Their reporting points to two central themes.
First, the United States has a tradition of prioritizing individualism over government restrictions. That aversion to collective action helped lead to inadequate state lockdowns and inconsistent adherence to mask wearing based on partisanship instead of public health.
By The New York Times | Sources: Oxford Covid-19 Government Response Tracker, New York Times database from state and local governments. Second, many experts agree, America’s poor results stem in substantial measure from the performance of the Trump administration. “If you had to summarize our approach, it’s really poor federal leadership — disorganization and denial,” said Andy Slavitt, who ran Medicare and Medicaid from 2015 to 2017.
The administration’s travel restrictions were insufficient. Health officials initially gave confusing advice around wearing masks in public. And the president’s public statements — including claiming that the virus wasn’t serious and would disappear — regularly spread misinformation. In no other high-income country have political leaders so frequently departed from expert advice.
Together, skepticism toward collective action and the administration’s scattered approach have undermined the national response to the pandemic. True, the United States has made some improvements, including on mask wearing and testing. But unlike in South Korea, Germany and other countries, the virus continues to overwhelm daily life for Americans.
The frustration for many experts is that this outcome was avoidable. As one said: “This isn’t actually rocket science. We know what to do, and we’re not doing it.”

Speedy Moto’s reputation must be growing like wild! THIS is a great example of service.

Although absolutely everything that comes up in the run up to elections must be viewed with a jaundiced eye, the probe into misuse of members’ dues as the personal kitty for higher-ups has been in the news for months. They must finally think there is enough evidence to bring a successful suit. I’m not holding my breath, but we can always hope.

Oh Happy Day! Our 3-wk wait for the refrigerator service guy ended this morning! We can finally have milk in the refrigerator that lasts more than a day!
The bill was an even $1,000 USD. For a repair of that magnitude (took 65 minutes), wouldn’t you think the repairman, who owns his own business, would have been eager to bump it up on his schedule by a couple of weeks?
I’m bitching about this in order to demonstrate that Covid-19 is the great equalizer: US service is currently on a par with Argentina’s. -

That is completely outrageous, daniel . I hope they send you a follow-up survey so you can point out the obvious.
I had a doctor appointment this week, and I got an education in the process. A couple in the waiting room insisted on talking in loud voices, proclaiming that “they can’t make us wear masks; this is a free country!” I remember the same ignorant mantra from years ago, about seatbelts. How much more obvious, masks! -
OMG, GMXam , you know more people affected by this virus than anyone I know. Are you still in TX? I see the state has had 57,000 new cases in the past 7 days, more than any other state - - and more than nearly any country.
Yes, this virus definitely is disproportionately infecting people who don’t have a choice about staying at home. Yet the loudest voices complaining about masks seem to come from people who aren’t forced to be out in the workplace rather than people designated as essential workers, who have no choice.
Please stay safe!

You had greater adventures than we did. We left Hawaíi in late March, as flights to the mainland were being pulled; hunkered down in New Orleans for about 10 weeks, and have become hermits in the woods of Michigan since mid-June.
Glad you got back to Texas. Are you still there? Family safe from the virus? Will you try to get back to Argentina when borders reopen? -
Argentine customers could have Amazon deliveries made in less than a year ! From the warehouse to Argentina in 11 minutes, then sitting in Aduana for 11 months !

That should be in full compliance with Social Distancing regulations.

Thin and cheap will be fine as long as you’re not close to any coronavirus particles!

Apparently you need at least 2 layers of 100% cotton. If you can find one with an inner layer of electrostatic fabric (I can’t find any), that is supposed to really boost the protection.
At least that’s the theory today. With luck the body of knowledge will continue to evolve. -
The world may be slowly coming around to a vegan point of view - slowly - but at least consumption of beef is trending downward, even as chicken consumption is increasing.
For the earth, that’s a good trade.
