I left this series way back on the original PlayStation with Tomb Raider 2. I loved that game so am not sure why I haven't followed TR through the console generations. My understanding is the series took a dip in the mid 2000s? I am interested in Shadow though. Splinter, when did the series pick back up and which games are worth a look through the 7th and 8th gen consoles?

It all went a bit pear shaped with Angel of Darkness, the last TR game that Core developed and when Crystal Dynamics took over in 2006 they released Legend, Underworld and Anniversary, with Lara still being a bit cartoonish with big boobs and hot pants etc.
In 2013 they launched the reboot as Tomb Raider, with Lara becoming a more realistic character, followed by Rise of the Tomb Raider in 2016 and finally Shadow, yesterday.
I play TR2 from time to time and still love it, but if you're looking for puzzles you could try Legend onwards and for a more real world experience, combined with far superior graphics, I'd recommend TR 2013 and Rise. You can pick them up quite cheap on Steam right now.
I play on PC so I don't know much about consoles, but 7th and 8th gen will play TR 2103 and onwards I would imagine.
Here are some screenshots from Shadow by the way.

Here's a great article from PC Gamer on what they think the devs got right and what they got wrong in the trilogy. Also what may lie in store for Lara in the future of the series.
