Are University people assaulted because a campus is fertile ground for smartphones, tablets, laptops?

Likely so, but really here people are mugged for any amount and any kind of valuable. You just need to have the face of cash/foreigner (which I do, sadly) to be in trouble.

I think that motochorros do not steal out of need, but out of their own choice. It could be construed 'because they are lazy or greed or out of society' and it is easier and faster to steal something from someone than getting up every morning to go to work, have a boss, have customers to please, etc.

  • The blame must be turned to the authorities of the University of BA. I know them very well.

They hate the police and had asked previously that the police must not be inside the Ciudad Universitaria, because in the 1960's they still remember that under a dictatoriship the police intervened perhaps harshly against them. The UBA is a nest of friends of the Cuban communism, perhaps now outdated.

Now the students and professors are an easy target to the motochorros and all the lumpenproletariat that we unfortunately have.

I was professor in this place untul 2008, so I know that this could happen to me as well.

The administration of UBA still refuse police protection? Or they just never bothered with changing the policy from 50 years ago?

According to the article, they have been requesting more police presence but the crime episodes are still happening. Either their request has gone unanswered or there are just too many motochorros (or the place is too big) than policemen.

  • However the political mood of the UBA is rejecting police action. Perhaps in the last years they chang their mind, but there is still a resentment about all people that uses unforms (military and policemen).

In the room where the board of the School of Architecture gathers, there are permanent posters about the years 1976-1983, of course neglecting to register that from 1970 to 1976 we were under a civil war fueled by the communist cubans. That is 38 years of recalling a dubious, biased story.

The only time I accessed a higher education/university building here, I was overwhelmed by the amount of posters and cartels of political left propaganda everywhere. It was messy and it looked like a junkyard. It was upsetting and I was eager to leave the building ASAP. I could not see myself attending university here. I do not like propaganda, whatever it is for (even for causes I support or that I am in agreement with).

I agree. I suffered it on myself. One time, in 1974, we have had to accept a funeral of a guerrilla warfare soldier with the corpse inside tue university hall, escorted by face covered guerrilla men, with gun machines.

Those were called "A marvelous youth" by Peron in 1972. Later, in 1974, he expelled them from tha Plaza de Mayo, fueling the illegal justice made by ultra right mobs. he played all options.

No suprise, then, when since 1976 the military on power made the same thing.

  • I was in Argentina in 1973-74 and knew enough to know that Peron was a dedicated fascist in the literal sense of the term. Yet the Argentine left welcomed him back as their compañero! How people can delude themselves to that degree is incomprehensible, yet it happened.

Of course, the Left got a rude surprise when Peron’s rightist buddies climbed trees at Ezeiza with their rifles and started shooting the leftists as Peron’s plane landed.

    Que casualidad!
