Venezuela earthquake

    As if the country hasn't seen enough, two massive quakes, the second much more powerful than the first, have hit the country. Although the official death toll is around 160, it's thought to be much higher than than that. Tragic.

    I saw the news last night as the football finished.

    I spent some brilliant times there in the late eighties and the early nineties.

    I started to call my freinds there - they are all safe buy each one said its really bad all over the place - caracas , Graeter Caracas and all the suburrbs.

    Just about to do another round of calls.

    The enormous 7.1 and 7.5 magnitude quakes coming so close to each other must be extremely rare. Is there any indication that tsunamis will follow, or are they unlikely because the quakes occurred under the ground instead of under the sea?

    We were briefly in La Guaira many years ago, when it wasn’t as highly developed. It is awful to see the aerial video of collapsed buildings there. I hope that technological advances, use of robots, etc will greatly improve rescue work for the victims trapped under rubble.

    Technological advances are fine but there are very few in the country at the moment.

    Europe and USA are sending people and I imagine equipment.

    My friends in Caracas tell me that the government is falsifying the figures - they may not be deilberately lying , they maybe do not know the exact figures.

    I see the experts here are saying Mendoza could be in for a large earthquake soon.The missus was telling me about the last big earthquake they had there in 1985. She remembers the ceiling lights and pictures on the walls moving even here.

    I imagine that's just the bodies they've found so far. No surprise given the speed of recovery. The figures of those missing will be nearer the mark. 10's of thousands.

    International help is arriving but the airports are still running below normal capacity.

    And the infrastructure is very badly damaged.

    The current government does not seem to be taking charge and doesnt seem to be capable of doing so.
