Historian Heather Cox Richardson described the scene in this way:

“Something happened at the event that made Secret Service agents evacuate Trump and First Lady Melania Trump. Exactly what happened is not yet clear: it appears law enforcement stopped an armed man outside the event, and a subsequent noise alarmed dinner attendees and Secret Service agents, who rushed the president, the first lady, and other government officials to a secure location.”

It is curious that this happened in a week when the president’s own MAGA base is questioning his previous assassination attempts.

A few years ago, we went to a Washington Mardi Gras Ball in that room, and it is cavernous. (There was room for a Mardi Gras parade inside it!) if the guy with the gun never even got in the door of the ballroom, it wasn’t exactly an assassination attempt.
