Historian Heather Cox Richardson described the scene in this way:

“Something happened at the event that made Secret Service agents evacuate Trump and First Lady Melania Trump. Exactly what happened is not yet clear: it appears law enforcement stopped an armed man outside the event, and a subsequent noise alarmed dinner attendees and Secret Service agents, who rushed the president, the first lady, and other government officials to a secure location.”

It is curious that this happened in a week when the president’s own MAGA base is questioning his previous assassination attempts.

Looks to be more like someone with a mental problem than an assassination attempt.

Probably planned by the man himself to justify his ballroom in the White House.

Pretty poor coverage last night by TN - io took them more than 20 minutes to realize that the whole thing happend in the Hilton and not the White House

I was watching it live on the BBC World as the news came in.

At least he was caprtured alive so he can give his side of the story. It wouldn't surprise me if the officer that was shot was shot by accident rather than by the gunman.

    Someone yelled "Shots!"
    and Patel and Hegseth said,
    "Whiskey, or tequila?"

A few years ago, we went to a Washington Mardi Gras Ball in that room, and it is cavernous. (There was room for a Mardi Gras parade inside it!) if the guy with the gun never even got in the door of the ballroom, it wasn’t exactly an assassination attempt. Maybe he had plans, but he might as well have been a block away.

Which will bolster his already over inflated ego even more.

From the NYT newsletter “The World,” 26-4-2026

“The armed man who rushed an event attended by President Trump wrote that administration figures were his targets, according to a note that law enforcement officials attributed to the suspect. Here’s the latest.

The roughly 1,000-word note doesn’t mention Trump by name, but it indicated that the suspect bore deep anger at the administration and the president himself. According to the note, the suspect said he could no longer allow a “traitor to coat my hands with his crimes.”

“It’s a dangerous profession,” he [TRUMP] told reporters gathered in their gowns and tuxedos in the White House briefing room late Saturday night. “It’s part of the job. I can’t imagine that there’s any profession that’s more dangerous.”

He is ignoring all the many other more dangerous professions. Starting with the military or his secret service protection. Also being a school teacher is more dangerous these days.

Good point. He considers all those people disposable pawns.

    And without Secret Service protection.
