We often get asked for recommendations by our guests. We lead a pretty tranquil life and we don't go out as much, so we are unprepared to reply.

Perhaps some forum members can share their own recommendations.

What we get asked for is:

    1. Idea for a day trip from Buenos Aires
    2. What to do on a rainy day
    3. Where to eat
    4. Where to go for a nice coffee

No. 2 was asked yesterday, and this was my reply:

What to do on a rainy day in Buenos Aires

Things to do on a rainy day:
    1) Mercado de Pulgas (flea market) just 4 blocks from the apartment (open Tue to Sun 11 am to 7 pm ) https://turismo.buenosaires.gob.ar/es/otros-estab…rcado-de-pulgas

    2) Art Museums:

    • Modern art: MALBA https://malba.org.ar/ (Wed to Monday, 12 pm - 8 pm)
    • Classic & contemporary: Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes https://bellasartes.gob.ar/ (Martes a viernes, de 11.00 a 19.30 (último ingreso). Sábados y domingos, de 10.00 a 19.30 (último ingreso).)
    • Classic & contemporary : Museo Nacional De Arte Decorativo https://museoartedecorativo.cultura.gob.ar/ Wed to Sun 1 pm - 9 pm

    Historic museums:

    • Museo Casa Rosada (Pink House on Plaza de Mayo, it is next to it) - Wed to Sun 11 am 6 pm. You can combine it with the Cabildo (historical town hall) which is across the square. (https://turismo.buenosaires.gob.ar/es/otros-estab…ntos/el-cabildo) On the same square you can find the Cathedral, the main Church of Argentina, Pope Francis was the ArchiBishop of Buenos Aires - https://turismo.buenosaires.gob.ar/es/otros-estab…l-metropolitana (free admission)
    • Museo Casa Larreta https://turismo.buenosaires.gob.ar/es/otros-estab…enrique-larreta Lun., mié., jue., vie., y feriados de 12 a 19h. Sáb., y dom., de 10 a 20h. Martes cerrado.
    • El Zanjón de San Telmo https://elzanjon.net.ar/ and underground system of tunnels that used to run under the streets in the very old times. (11 am to 5 pm all days - this is a private museum and it is not cheap) - You can combine it with San Telmo Antique Fair, which is held every Sunday in the streets surrounding Plaza Dorrego (no fair if it rains, beware of pickpocketers). Combine it with the San Telmo Market (also for casual eating and in case of rain, since it is an indoor market alike to Quincy Market in Boston) https://www.instagram.com/elmercadosantelmo

☔ What would a local do on a rainy day?

    • Visit Librería El Ateneo this is a must see. A bookstore within a theatre! https://turismo.buenosaires.gob.ar/es/otros-estab…-grand-splendid ( Lun a Sáb de 9 a 21 h. Dom de 11 a 21 h.
    • Hang out in a classic coffee place and treat yourself for a "merienda" (afternoon snack). They are called "bar notables" and are scattered across the city, with different flairs https://turismo.buenosaires.gob.ar/es/article/bares-notables (note: the coffee usually sucks, but the atmosphere will bring you back of a century)

When I first came to BA my future missus said she'd show me around. I told her if it involved queueing and paying entrance fees especially for museums and art galleries to forget it as I wasn't interested. She smiled and said thank goodness for that. We spent the days just walking about the centre seeing the sights.

serafina , these are well-considered recommendations.

I’m curious about your suggestions for #1 and #3.

    1. Tigre and a day trip to an estancia, but I don't have any actual advice on where to go as we have stopped doing it a few years ago. A day at an estancia costs like a weekend in a city in Europe, so I'll gladly spend my money when I visit my family this summer.
    2. With my husband not eating meat, 80% of places are off our list. We just go out to eat pizza, but we have cut down a lot. Last night, a pizza marinara and a bottle of quilmes stout cost us 42,000 ARS (30 USD) in a run down place with cobwebs and tucked away in Montserrat. I can't imagine what would cost to go out for pizza in Palermo, not to mention other kind of food places where you actually have to cook ingredients instead of opening a can of tomato sauce.

Very discouraging. It sounds as if travelers won’t find many bargains in Argentina in the near future.

Yeah, a coffee shop owner near our STR in Hollywood said that this year there aren't many tourists. I can see why! There are still tourists, but the high cost of living has weeded out many.

Those who come here, really want to visit Argentina vs. those who were here just because it was cheap.

Yeah I'm not surprised to be honest. The country had a false economy for years and years under the K regime. Something had to give and first to go was the farcical Dollar Blue rate.

Or - - people who want to travel but aren’t wealthy just can’t afford Argentina now, even if they would really like to visit for all the right reasons.

I remember the days I couldn't afford to fly anywhere even in economy class and staying in youth hostels. Joking aside....although prices have gone up here it's still an affordable destination.

It’s all relative, isn’t it. And highly dependent on one’s disposable income.

Yes. I suspect the people serafina was referring to were those who used Argentina just as a cheap place to stay on a long term basis. Then constantly moaned when the prices started to no longer suit their budget and lifestyle. The other forum was full of them.

Yes, we are receiving lots of actual tourists, whereas in the past we had digital nomads who hopped from destination to destination following the trend/economy.

They used to stay for longer periods, which suited us well.
