    NYT:

    ‘House burping’ is catching on.

“In Germany, it is second nature for people to open their windows a few times each day to cycle out stale air. They call the practice “lüften,” which roughly translates to “ventilate” or “air out.” Many German landlords make their tenants promise to do so daily.

In recent weeks, lüften has gained traction with Americans, who have flooded social media with videos referring to the practice as “house burping.” Unlike many online trends, there are real benefits: Experts say that opening windows can help clean the air and reduce mold.”

Soon as I open windows the missus complains. Either because the air coming in is too hot or too cold.

With a pleasant breeze coming off the river I open the windows early morning and late evening, but have to close them during the day to keep the heat out.

We do the same as Splinter . In general, we try to leave windows open as much as we can, weather permitting.

I don't much like the word, burp, but I do know that after a couple of beers, my brother and I used to see which of us could burp the word Bulawayo in a beer induced burp.

    Try it, it's fun!

For summer we open them as early as possible in the morning. Let the cool air in, and shut it out once things warm up. The traditional Argentina building materials of cement/ceramics absorb, and hold the temperature throughout the day. Until the outside of the home absorbs all that sun. Though not sure if that is the same idea of the NYT article.

I like the German word much better than the American one. But I see the point. Our houses are so tightly sealed against loss of warm/cool air loss that we are also breathing in not just dust and mold, but chemical given off by our furniture, mattresses, etc.

We tend to keep our house open wide except for the very hottest and coldest days in the year. But even then, it’s probably a good idea to “lűften” now & then.

The German term mentioned here invites a natural enquiry of what "luftwaffe" translates to in English.

    Air force.

Keep your luft waffing is my suggestion.
