Another deal that seems aimed more at generating money for insider cronies than at actually helping Argentina.

The United States finalized a $20 billion lifeline for Argentina that will benefit Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent’s allies.

Apparently it might now go up to US$40bn, according to Bessent.

How much, including the IMF loan and others, does Argentina actually owe? I really don't like this.

This stinks. I’d like to read the names of Bessent’s billionaire buddies, and exactly how much each stands to lose if Argentina doesn’t keep getting these cash transfusions.

I believe there’s another thread about trump’s promise of $20 billion to Argentina, later clarified to mean only if things go Milei’s way in voting this month. But I can’t locate it so am posting this gift article here.

Trump Helped Argentina Face an Economic Meltdown. It Came At a Cost. (Gift Article)
When President Javier Milei of Argentina faced an economic meltdown, President Trump vowed to come to his aid. But that lifeline is coming at a cost.

I do not know much, but I think this other extra 20B mentioned by Bessent is him asking his many banker buddies to create a US fund that would invest in Argentina sovereign debt instruments. I think that means to invest in Bonds and similar that argentina already offers. Often bonds sales do not attract enough buyers, which then result in lowering of the bond prices so argentina gets less. Sovereign debt sales are the normal way that all countries and municipalities raise money.

With the polls not looking too rosey for Milei (no surprise there considering the way the K's bought so many voters fucking up the economy along the way) I think he's had to resort to doing it.

Can someone please explain the significance of this to me? :scratchead:

I re-read that article a few times last week and still could not comprehend it all. Especially the part about it being a swap line. I can understand that the US treasury bought peso denominated Argentina bonds and or peso directly. Bessent indicates they already made a profit, which would mean they already sold the bonds for a higher price, or sold less pesos to get back the same number of original dollars. That is what is well known for those who timed it right. it is just that Bessent is still vague about the details.

Even after re-reading the article trying to explain exactly what a swap line is https://buenosairesherald.com/economics/how-…rency-swap-work

And here yesterday they confirm more, while still not being specific

US Treasury Secretary says Argentina has activated the currency swap - Buenos Aires Herald
Although no Argentine authorities have confirmed it, Bessent said that ‘a small amount’ of the US$20 billion credit line has been used
