Apart from the fact that most British citizens are against any form of ID cards, this will not stop illegal immigrants crossing the channel in small boats. They certainly wouldn't be turned back and most people view this as the Labour government moving towards authoritarianism, although I see that as a tad exaggerated.

I don't much like having an ID card, but I've got used to it and see the pros and cons. Yet, that doesn't stop illegal immigrants entering Argentina does it?

I don't see any problem in it. The people I've known who are against such things usually have something to hide.

Not sure post-WWII German Jews who survived, looking back on what they’d been through, would agree, UK Man . I used to have the same optimistic attitude you have, until I began to see what an unscrupulous govt could do. Then I realized there are many reasons unrelated to having “something to hide,” that people are wise to protect whatever privacy they have.

I don't think it will get through parliament anyway. It's been tried before.

Totally unnecessary and is just more invasion in peoples lives. Reeves at the ready to up taxes to pay for it all, then enjoy the money rolling in selling people's personal information like they did with the NHS app. With this, the online safety act and muting of the government having access to your bank account without a court order to do as they see fit we are racing to get to 1984.

Does the ID card proposal need parliamentary approval? I can't find anything that confirms this.

I'm not sure but would have hoped so. Let's see though as it appears to be deeply unpopular.
