The stand-alone quote, delivered in a week when the US president has just steamrolled over freedom of speech, freedom of the press, and freedom from fear; and has threatened freedom of assembly; and has announced that he will be sending the National Guard to selected cities to “maintain order” :

““Those of us who defend the ideas of freedom must work together for the well-being of our peoples,” Mr. Milei said.”

Perhaps Mr. Milei is nostalgic about the days of the military dictatorship. Or maybe he just wants the money. We know what Mr. Trump wants. Argentina, hold on to your lithium!

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said “all options” are under consideration to help President Javier Milei.

I'd rather have the US supporting us than the dodgy bunch the K's got us into bed with.

UK Man , you are making the assumption that the US actually WILL be supporting Argentina. That’s a stretch. Ask Ukraine.

I couldn't care less to be honest. Still far better than Argentina being in bed with a bunch of gun toting drug barons and murderers.

I wouldn't go that far because I do care. But let's be honest, Milei's politics align with Trump's and if he can take advantage of that to Argentina's benefit, that can only be a good thing. As long as he doesn't give away what he shouldn't because Trump is a grabber and has no scruples.

I care for the sensible people here who are going through bad times. However there are far too many Argentines taking the piss and being allowed to get away with it. I see it every day and no end to it seems to be in sight.

Yes, there is a some time until Argentina needs assistance to honor its debt payments in 2026 as mentioned in the NYT article. I believe that is what they are prepping for here. The question is, will Trump and Bessent still honor these handshake deals at those times.

"These options may include, but are not limited to, swap lines, direct currency purchases, and purchases of U.S. dollar-denominated government debt from Treasury's Exchange Stabilization Fund," Bessent wrote on X.
