Ulysses syndrome (immigrant syndrome of chronic and multiple stress) is an atypical set of depressive, anxious, dissociative, and somatoform symptoms that results from being exposed to extreme levels of stress unique to the process of modern migration.[1] Rather than a mental disorder, this syndrome is a natural reaction to toxic levels of stress seen in migrants who are otherwise in normal mental health.[1]

I may have done in the early years following my arrival in Argentina, but I'm well over it now. I used to get terribly homesick, usually triggered by certain music or the green hills of Wales, but very rarely now. In fact, I'm very content living here because I've got used to the way things work, or don't work.

Never really suffered homesickness as such. However the longer I'm here the more I get the feeling I'm an incomer and always will be.

The first 72 hrs after I come back are the hardest. Changing season, economy and climate and stress level when walking on the street is quite upsetting.

I get angry at my former Italian neighbors whose main complain is that the municipality hasn't cutten the grass on their street, or that there are piles of leaves sitting on the curbside.

I am also angry at the locals for not being able to improve their quality of life with maintenance, no littering, picking up your dog's poo etc.

In gated community, everything is pristine, so I am sure that people here see the same things as me when walking along the street and they know it can be different (and it should!)

    And this doesn’t help:

Have experienced all the seasonal, economic, climate etc disorientation you so well describe. There is also a large disconnect among the things that cause either indifference or anxiety in people in varying cultures.
