Annobón is a tiny island 17 sq km of the coast of Equatorial Guinea and is ruled with an iron fist by the government of that corrupt country.
QuoteOn May 27, 2025 Annobón's separatist Prime Minister, Orlando Cartagena Lagar, formally requested the annexation of the island to Argentina as a result of the "Repression caused by the dictatorship of Equatorial Guinea." Stating that Annobón was part of the Viceroyalty of the Rio de la Plata during the Spanish Colonial era.
It's anyone's guess as to how this will continue, but since separatists on the island have already been arrested and imprisoned on the mainland, one would imagine that will continue.
It has zero economy, has only 5000 inhabitants and they don't even have a chemist or bakery on the island, so what could Argentina do for them?
I can only imagine the answers to that question.
What the islanders really want is for Argentina to recognise their independence, not to be part of Argentina. In fact, the prime minister of the island was on a recent visit to this country and was interviewed on several TV and radio shows. Their main language is Spanish by the way.
