A not so famous local singer from Santiago del Estero decided to supplement her singing income with an atelier selling branded clothes imported from abroad, located in Buenos Aires. However, we all know how hard it is to import stuff into Argentina (much to my surprise, in Argentina there is no Versace, Armani, Gucci, Luis Vuitton, Hermes etc.). She did the best she could and ordered stuff from the US in her own name, but remember - we are in Argentina: there is a cap on the amount of stuff you can order from abroad per year.
Her limit was met, her family's limits were met... so she had no better idea than using Province Governors' own CUITs (fiscal codes). Perhaps she thought that being politicians, it would have fallen under the radar. However, it backlashed and she is now potentially facing 8 years in prison. Using other people's data is bad, and the 'damage' she did was just 1200 usd in missed import taxes. It seems a bit harsh considering there are killers and violators on the loose for much worse.
I can't shake the feeling that she did so only because of the draconian rules of Argentina. She didn't want to hurt anyone and evidently her business was doing well.
