I've been an expat now for well over 20 years and I've noticed that the people I used to be in touch with when I lived in the UK, including family, are now more distant.

Does anyone else feel the same way?

I haven’t been away from my country for 20 years, but in the aggregate 4+ years we’ve spent in Argentina, I’ve noticed that when we’re away, we are the ones who do the most communicating from our end, as everyone else’s lives go on undisturbed. We even feel that when here in the US, as we are 1600 km away from family members, and need to make a concentrated effort to at least text and email. As for friends, they are scattered throughout the country and the world, and none of us can claim to be great at keeping in close touch.

It really seems that the more means of communication available to us, the worse we are at using them.

My close family have never been great ones for keeping in touch apart from the usual birthday's and festive season. Since becoming adults we've always been spread all over the place getting on with our lives which might be the reason.

Will be meeting up with my older brother for the first time in over 40 years when we're back in the UK.

I have lived outside Scotland since 1990.

Keep in contact with my sister's on a regular basis and have chats at least once every two weeks.

Messages with cousins via Facebook and WhatsApp.

Probably only in contact with three or four friends from school and two from University and maybe three or four from my time in Spain.

I can relate to that because my brother and three sisters and I have lived all over the place being from a naval family, so we got used to being apart for long periods. But when we do meet up, it's like the years never passed.

And Rice is right because even though we now have instant comms, it hasn't really improved matters. Way back, I used to email news letters to family and friends...

And before that, actually hand-writing letters. Quaint!
