Successive governments have treated pensioners like shit in Argentina and I'm surprised that Milei hasn't capitalised on that fact. They are still treated like shit, which has led to these protests.

However, football hooligans, who don't care why or for what reason they should set fire to anything in sight or rip up paving stones to hurl at the police, enjoyed an evening of violence yesterday by claiming to support pensioners.

Clearly their motive was to give the impression of government repression of protests.

More than 120 detained, 20 injured as pensions protest turns violent
Protesting pensions joined by football supporters for anti-austerity demonstration; Security forces clash with hooligans; 124 detained and at least 20 injured…

Seems the ringleaders were each paid 50000 pesos upfront for their few hours work. I was watching the BBC World news when they broke in with live pictures from BA.

I think the well known trope of “protesters getting paid” has been debunked many times around the world. An easy false rumor which spreads easy that is part of the autocrat playbook.

    It's NOT a trope. It's fact.

In fact, before Milei took over, the protesters had their $$ allowances pegged as fines for NOT turning up.

Oh, ok. Only fake news in all the many other countries where the leaders say protesters were there because they were paid. It is only real in Argentina. :S
