The PASO (Primarias, Abiertas, Simultáneas y Obligatorias) elections, usually held a few months before elections and often referred to as primaries, may be scrapped althogether if Milei has his way. The debate has already gained a majority in the lower house and looks like being approved.

Last time around it cost the government US$165m.

This is not the same as a US primary which is to elect a presidential candidate and is an internal vote. Here, it becomes a thermometer for the real election and is a total shit show which was first introduced by Kristina Kirchner in 2009, presumably to benefit her and her cronies.

The only problem is that some of the smaller and totally irrelevant political parties use the Paso elections as a form of finance.

Sounds like without the paso primaries then those smaller parties could die complety. To become only two party country? With the pasos the tiny parties are not irrelevant, since they bubble up ideas that are outside the box which might go on to become policy or details of the final elections

But should a party with no members be allowed to finance itself from government subsidies?

That's exactly what my missus objects to. She said many of them are obviously so ridiculous and are in it just for the money they get.

In other countries to become a candidate you first need to get NN number of signatures of voters. I imagine something similar to startup a political party plus other requirements. Argentina should have similar roadblocks to be sure there are only legitimate parties who are then eligible to receive money from a national or provincial campaign fund.

I suspect the K regime were up to no good when 'splashing the cash'. Hence the change.
