Went to the late MIL's house this afternoon to check everything was okay. While in the back garden I spotted something unusual and gave it a light kick with my foot. It suddenly made a noise like a mobile phone notification would make which startled me to be honest. I picked it up but the noise stopped. Here's some pictures of 'the thing'.

Really? WTF was it doing in the MIL's garden? I thought they were for luggage?
The multi storey hotel that adjoins the MIL's house is currently undergoing refurbishment. As the garden during this process has been littered with all sorts of builders crap over recent months I told the missus to contact the architect in charge whom she knows well to tell him I found the air tag.
He replied saying it wasn't his and he would make enquiries. He suggested maybe the husband of a jealous wife found it and threw t away. 
We use one for Serafina when we are away on vacation and I have one in my keychain. It looks like yours had a silicon case, but I can't figure out where it was supposed to be stuck to/attached to. Perhaps a drone?
The owner can have it play a sound to help locate it (from my iPhone, using the Find My... app). It is also possible to be notified when found after reporting it as missing/stolen. I think it was beeping because it was finally found.
You can use any device that has NFC (Near Field Communication), such as an iPhone or Android phone,
to see if the AirTag's owner marked it as lost and, if you can, help return it.
You can follow these steps to see if you can find information about the AirTag.
- If you have found an AirTag, hold the top of your iPhone or NFC-capable smartphone near the white side of the AirTag until a notification appears.
- Tap the notification. This opens a website that provides information about the AirTag, including its serial number and the last four digits of the phone number of the person who registered it. This can help you identify the owner, if you know them. You might want to take a screenshot to make sure that you can document the information.
- If the owner marked the AirTag as lost, you might see a message with information about how to contact the owner.
To learn more about an AirTag that’s been separated from its owner,:
scroll to the bottom of the Items tab, then tap Identify Found Item.
(If you need to see a list of all AirTag and Find My Network accessories about which you have been notified, launch the Find My app on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch.)
Tap Items. Scroll to the bottom and tap Items Detected With You.
Items that have recently triggered a tracking alert will be listed.

No word back from the architect of the hotel renovation work that's going on next door so that line of inquiry seems to be a dead end. I did a search on Google to see if there was a way of finding out who the owner was. We don't have any Apple devices so I tried scanning it with the wife's Android phone as it has the NFC function....but nothing appeared. 
I'd just like to return it to its owner.

I'm not that smart. I just realised if I had zoomed into the last picture before I started the thread it would have told me what it was.
