An invitation feature has now been added, so members can invite their contacts to join the forum. This can be done by email or word of mouth/other means by use of a code which has an expiry date of 14 days. This expiry date is arbitrary and can be either infinite or increased/decreased, but for the moment 14 days seems fair.
