It was announced today that a long sought commercial agreement between Mercosur (Argentina, Paraguay, Uruguay, and Brazil) and the European Union was signed.

I don't think it will impact us, the commoners, but it still seems a step forward to bringing Mercosur countries up to date with first world countries.

El acuerdo, renovado luego de la firma en 2019, durante el macrismo, enfrenta desafíos clave antes de entrar en vigor, incluida su ratificación parlamentaria…

I understand that Mercosur has signed the agreement. Next step is the EU Parliament. “where France’s steady opposition to the agreement will be one of the main hurdles to overcome”

    Hello everybody,

Interesting and important to my family on both sides of the Mercosur/EU agreement.

Argentina needs to improve its exports, my expert friend in Misiones says, 'put simply, we need to have 5 containers going out for every 2 coming in'.

Argentina infrastructure development, e.g. for shale oil and gas, will need foreign investment...why not from Europe??

Europe will benefit by simplified export rules and taxes, with good markets for the industry heavy countries like Germany with car production.

    Then there is France... sigh...

The French electorate, myself included, have been too complacent about the rise of the popular far right since at least 1996. Marine Le Pen, under investigation for corruption as an MEP, has her sights firmly set on the 2027 presidential election. She is using the farmers to topple the government, always for more power. The call to action is over imported meat quotas and fears over standards.

However, looking at the bigger picture, France is in a good position to be an infrastructure provider, particularly if the USA puts up trade barriers on domestic imports.

    Cordialement,

It is helpful to read your insights from both Argentine and French standpoints, Sarran1955.

I, too, have been very concerned about Marine Le Pen’s — and the far right’s — longtime increasing strength in France. Giorgia Meloni, Prime Minister of Italy, is also right wing, and, while Italy is second only to Germany in exports to South America, Italy also has enough voting power to either pass or sink this agreement. Will she side with France, and oppose it? Or will she decide it is smart for the EU to have Mercosur as a major trading partner if the trump tariffs turn out to be more than just a threat?

    Edit:

Just saw this in Politico (exports/imports):
