And about time too. Why should they be free for foreigners anyway?

As a strong advocate of free education generally , Id Iove to disagree with Splinter but I cannot.

It’s an easy and rightful target of correcting and controlling public expenditure.

    Same for health too obviously

You're welcome to disagree with me as much as you like. This isn't BAExpats.

Anyway, public university education for Argentines is free, as are schools. I just don't see why the tax payer has to pay for foreigners, unless I've misunderstood you.

I understood what you said, @Bombonera , to mean that your general support of free education would normally lead you to disagree, but given the circumstances, you agree with Splinter ’s POV.

    More or less right?

The missus has been complaining about this for years. I think it had to do with some arrangement they made with other Mercosur countries. However it all ended up being one way traffic which was no surprise Quite what they received in return remains a mystery.

As I have said before, I don’t understand why university should be 100% free in general. We have an income-based system in Italy. The fee can go down to €0 for certain cases (lowest income, highest grades).
Right now, public university was a door to immigrants who were seeking an easy way to come to Argentina. Not all are actually interested in studying, just in the study visa.
The amount of students is enormous, and the expenditure to maintain it is considerable.
When something is completely free, there are going to be abuse of the system.

Also, from what I have heard, public university ended up being heavily polarized by a certain political party, driving away students and professors who disagree with their political ideas.

I am not saying to make it paid like a private university, but some sort of payment should weed off those who are not interested in studying.

From my research on Europe, in various countries (Spain and the UK), there are different rates for residents vs. European citizens vs. International students.

The quality of the education is another reason many come to study. The idea must be that a high percentage of the doctors, scientists, engineers, and other professionals who complete their careers stay in Argentina to fill those positions which are required to grow this country. Healthcare especially.

Probably to fill the gaps left by Argentine professionals who go to live in Spain.

The people we ho complete their degrees are not obligated to stay. The Brazilians almost all of them go back to their own country.

Paraguayans , pervians tdnd to stay for a time.
