I am crazy about their advertising! I guess this will require a trip to Scotland to taste it.

(This will also mean the hassle of the UK’s new electronic approval hurdle for visitors and even those simply connecting flights. What’s with THAT? And will every other country follow their lead?)

I just found that out about that last night after the missus was talking about it. Her UK passport expires the day after we arrive into the UK so she was planning to enter using her Spanish passport. So rather than pay £10 she's now just going to renew her UK passport before we travel.

With all due respect it was the USA that started these online visa things....

The EU will probably start their much postponed system sometime in 2025

She was going to renew it when we were there anyway. So no point in paying the tenner.

GlasgowJohn , I didn’t even know the USA was requiring the electronic approval for visitors. For people just making connecting flights too? How long has this been in effect?

I’m not for anything that increases the red tape of travel, so I apologize to the world on behalf of the USA.

USA introduced it in 2008 more or less for citizens of about 40 countries . Probably about 50 now.

Everyone else has to line up and apply for their Visa which costs a pack of money.

Yes people using connecting flights in the USA have to get one ( or get A visa) because there are no sterile areas the international parts in US airports.

The US miss out on a lot of international business because it's so difficult to connect in almost all the airports.

Back in the eighties and nineties I had a full visa when I used to visit every two months or so. But since 2010 or so I have been using the Esta system. I will say the USA system works very well and you get your approval in a matter if hours.

She's changed her mind. She can't be arsed renewing her passport from here so she's going to enter the UK with her Spanish passport and suck up having to get the eTA.

    I think that makes sense.

My lad has to renew his UK passport and we are just hanging on until the next UK trip.

At least we save on the DHL fees...

Her UK passport runs out the day after we arrive. I didn't know it's recommended to have several months still to run on your passport when entering the UK so she didn't have much choice really. I still have a couple of years to go on mine.

Do you have to ship back yours? It costs just $40-50 to mail a document to the UK.
Or perhaps you mean the cost to get it shipped here?

And are passports issued on the spot in the UK?

Last time I renewed mine I sent it to the UK. As for having it issued on the spot. Here's what the website says.

''Same day services: All same day services have been suspended since the pandemic.

Fastest service: The fastest service is 7 working days from when an appointment is booked.

Urgent passport options: There are two options for getting a passport urgently:

1 day premium: You can renew an adult passport with this service. You'll need to hand in your old passport at your appointment, and your new passport will be ready to collect 4 hours later.

1 week fast track: You can use this service to renew a passport, change personal details, replace a lost or stolen passport, or get a child passport. Your new passport will be delivered to you by courier 1 week after your appointment. ''

All UK passports are issued in the UK. If you live abroad you have to mail it back and they send it to you by DHL.

When I did mine by post a few years ago, I paid online, sent the old one off by post and received the new one by DHL about ten days later.

    Easy peasy.

I’m impressed by that even if it was years ago. In fact it suggests that UK passports issued to overseas nationals are prioritised over domestically-based nationals.

I don’t know, but anecdotally that’s what such a prompt service suggests to me.

I did it last time in 2015 and it expires again in April, so I'll try again in March 2025. In the meantime, I'll check online again and see if the system has changed at all.

I still don't understand the convenience of doing it express in the UK during your 2-week trip vs. by mail in advance.

    1-day premium - £207.50

    1 week fast-track - £166.50

    standard service (3 weeks) - £88.50

If requesting the passport from Argentina - A standard passport is £101 for an adult, and £65.50 for a child. Plus a £19.86 courier fee.

I'll just go for standard because I'll do it well in advance since we have no plans to travel in the near future.

Well seen you don't know my missus. She thinks the same day service is a bargain.
