I'd heard of One Direction, but never of this young man, who was only 31 years old. He is said to have been drinking heavily, taking drugs and had only been in Buenos Aires to watch his former bandmate, Niall Horan, performing at a concert.

Whether you like it or not, when a celebrity dies, it's front page news. Make of that what you will.

Either way, it's tragic, because he was also father of a young child.

The singer fell from the third floor of a hotel in Buenos Aires, Argentina, local media are reporting.

    Casa Sur Hotel in Palermo.....

I know we shouldn't speculate but drugs and alcohol may have led to the fall.

Just listened to the young receptionist calling 911 asking for assistance prior to the fall/jump.

    Quite horrific.

He had a fine voice for such a young singer.

In Palermo Hollywood? We were just a couple of blocks from there this afternoon, but fortunately didn’t walk down Costa Rica, which must be mobbed.

If drugs were indeed the cause, I can’t help wondering if he even knew what he was doing. Very tragic end to such a young life.

The case keeps going on and five people were charged for his death: a friend who left 50 minutes before he died regardless of Liam's altered state, the hotel staff that sent him to his room and the guys who allegedly sold him cocaine.

    From the BA Herald: https://buenosairesherald.com/society/crime/…am-paynes-death

Both of them, the judge said, “should have kept him safe in an area free of hazards, keeping him company until he was provided with medical assistance.” While they did not intend for Payne to die, their “reckless” actions while fulfilling their responsible roles led to the tragic end, the judge added.

“Taking Payne up to the room he was staying at, while he was in that state, created a danger to his life that is legally unacceptable,” Judge Bruniard said. She added that, in her opinion, Payne did not faint before falling, but that rather he was trying to “leave through the balcony.”

I agree with the reasoning but I wouldn't want to find myself in a room (even on the ground floor) with a drugged man going crazy. I would fear for my own safety.

Since when were hotel employees responsible for our safety through our actions?

I guess it was about leaving to his own a person clearly not able to care for itself. Had he been suffering of a physical ailment, it would be easier. I am personally challenged when it comes to be unbiased toward mental illnesses, I must admit.

I always try to "convert" it to a physical one to help me put it in the right perspective, but it is kind of hard to really appreciate an invisible illness, especially one involving psychology/psychiatry. It is easier to blame lack of willpower and self-restraint in case of addictions, or to lack of reasoning / sound choice-making in case of other psychological/psychiatric issues.

We have all certainly met in our lives people with some sort of these problems, and if this person is a close one, it is very hard to manage one own's reaction and remembering the underlying issue.

My husband has a close friend with a few psychological issues, who has been going to therapy forever (his various therapists diagnosed him over the years), but I can't stop judging him and calling him a a*****le with a bogus excuse.

serafina , don’t be so hard on yourself. It is very possible for a person to be both mentally disturbed and a jerk at the same time.
