Does anyone, apart from Argentines attach any significance to Mother's Day? When I lived in the UK and my mother was still alive, I would send her a card, if I remembered and very possibly take her out in the car. But it was never a significant day for most of us in the UK.

Argentines are obsessed with special days - friends' day, mother's day, fathers' day etc etc.

I really don't give a monkey's, especially since I have to show appreciation for someone else's mother not even related to me, or various mothers for that matter.

Mothers’ Day is a big deal in the US. When I was a child, my Dad always bought red rosebuds to pin on our collars. He wore a white one because his mother was no longer living.

We made possibly edible breakfasts for Mama, and always went to visit our grandmother on that day. But that visit wasn’t an all-day affair.

Here, family holidays tend to drift more towards the level of Christmas celebrations.

In Scotland , it was a card if we remembered when it was.

But in Spain it was huge.

But in Spain it was the first Sunday in May in honour of the Virgin Mary.

Same as in Italy. May is the month of the Virgin Mary, and the month of roses.

I didn't really buy the whole Mother's day issue back in Italy, let alone here in Argentina where there is no significance to the chosen day.

It made 'somehow' sense to celebrate Father's Day on St. Joseph's day (3/19) and Mother's Day in the Virgin Mary's month. It makes no sense to me to just 'celebrate' based on a commercial calendar, but this applies also to the many 'special days' they have in Argentina.

Also, I am still surprised that on those occurrence, the recipients of the celebration (Lawyer's Day, Teacher's Day, Commercial employee's Day) are not working.

We had a bigger thing in Italy for the International Women's Day (March 8), but we still had to go to work, except that some thoughtful colleagues gifted to their women colleagues mimosas. It was a nice gesture and I love flowers!

Merchants, florists, greeting card makers, and, especially, restaurants are the real winners on Mothers’ Day. I suspect that Fathers’ Day isn’t as lucrative.

But the whisky , bourbon and wine boys are pretty happy.

My mother had the sense not to expect a card as she thought they were a total waste of money. I usually just got her a box of chocolates and proceeded to eat half of them once opened.

Here the MIL expected to be carried by sedan chair to be wined and dined at her favourite restaurant. Considering we used to do that every Sunday anyway it wasn't much of a surprise.
