After the devastation of Helene last week, hurricane Milton is developing into a category 4 in the Gulf of Mexico with wind speeds of up to 175mph.

    That's an unimaginable wind speed.

Hurricane Milton rapidly intensifies into category 4 storm
Hurricane Milton is expected to make landfall in Florida on Wednesday.

The path looks like a wide East-West swath straight across Florida, stretching from north to south, with the worst storm surge from Tampa to Cape Coral.

This is the fifth hurricane to make landfall on the gulf coast this season.

I couldn't live there. The area seems to get them every year.

I was never comfortable with Florida because of the weather. When it is nice, it is a wonderful State. But I couldn’t live with the fear of hurricanes hovering over my head. Too much of a gamble!

No fire, earthquakes, storm or hurricanes for me, thanks!

Think about the geography of Florida: it is 100% coastline!

This hurricane looks to be somewhere between a cat 4 and cat 5 with wind speeds over 160mph and probably the worst in generations.

One of my brother's friends who lives in Tampa is toughing it out, so let's see how that goes!

People who think they are more macho than a massive hurricane headed directly for their city, make me crazy. The people in Tampa and the whole west coast of FL are now being told “IT IS TOO LATE TO EVACUATE. SHELTER IN PLACE.”

When the storm hits the macho people who brag they are going to “ride out the storm” will put at risk the lives of rescuers.

All the newspaper accounts were written before dawn, and our tv has chosen this very day not to work. (Prediction: the next time this happens will be the morning after US elections)

So I’m not yet able to see what must be terrible destruction from the hurricane, spinoff tornadoes, or storm surge. Also dreading learning whether there was significant flooding at Tampa Bay.

The Hurricane problem was made worse by a huge number of tornadoes on the east coast of Florida.

I believe the number of spinoff tornados is currently at 127. An unheard of number. And many of them have been fierce.

yeah, there was a lot of shear present in this instance so the tornadoes were pretty strong compared to what you would normally see in the outer bands

Three million people without power is certainly nothing to sneeze at, but what a relief that this hurricane’s damage wasn’t as catastrophic as predicted. 100+ houses were reported destroyed, and 12 people died, amid much damage and flooding. But considering that large storm’s path straight across the peninsula, it’s astounding that the destruction wasn’t far greater.

I have some friends in Vero Beach on the east coast. The tornadoes caused a pile of damage there.

Yes, terrible damage and flooding. And the death count is now up to 15. But so remarkable that, over such a large, populated area, the hurricane and 127 tornadoes didn’t leave an absolutely flattened state behind.

I believe read that 6 of the deaths were on the east coast, caused by tornadoes. I hope your friends are safe, GlasgowJohn .

“Wildly improbable conspiracy theories about Hurricanes Helene and Milton have spread largely unchecked on social media. The storms were engineered to clear the way for lithium mining. They were sent to help the Democrats in next month’s election. They were formed by weather-controlling lasers.”

The missus has a friend who lives in Fort Myers. Her and her husband decided to get out before it hit and went to Miami. She was telling the missus she's been told the area where they live fortunately seems to have escaped the worst. They're waiting for the roads to be cleared before heading back.

Glad they are fine, GlasgowJohn , but I know what it is like to be without power after a storm, not knowing how many days/weeks it could be.

aficionado , the bizarre conspiracy theories didn’t just arise from the ether. Desperate people do desperate things. The question is why anyone at all believes these things?
