Whilst I’ve walked down some of them off Florida and Lavalle over the years, I’ve been poking around a few running across and between Avenida de Mayo and Corrientes on the Congress side of things.

Naturally the streets are narrow and not that comfortable for someone on foot. They tend to be dusty and fumy from the traffic.

    I’ve noticed a couple of things…

The side streets can have a commercial “theme”. That is to say one I walked down was predominantly populated by sign-makers. Another by musical instrument sellers.

But there’s always plenty of sandwich shops and cafes and even full-blooded white table-cloth restaurants that are way off the track of the casual visitor.

Do you have a favourite back-street like this? Or a favourite shop or eatery in one of these back-streets that would be largely unknown to a lot of visitors?

Where the missus has the apartment is a bit like that. It's off the beaten tourist track so the vendors and cafes are inhabited by locals which I find far more interesting.

@Bombonera , you make some very interesting observations. do anny favorite small streets come to mind?

And yes, we had some favorite restaurants on hidden alleyways and small streets in microcentro and San Telmo, but none remained after the pandemia lockdown.

BTW, we stopped by your find, Barbacoa Parrilla, and agree with you about the nice atmosphere. We talked to the owner, Maria, who told us this is her 30th year in business, and spoke with great pride about the quality of meat she buys. In 2006, we rented about 6 blocks from there, and enjoyed walking down that small street, but never went in to Barbacoa. Thanks to you, we will go there now.

UK Man , can you tell us the names of some of the streets, or just the general area? Sounds like a locals area that I’d really enjoy exploring!

Yes! We will include the area of Uruguay near Av. Santa Fe in one of our daily walks, to seek out places where locals predominate.

Don't blame me if it turns out to be unexciting. ^^

We’ve been here too many years to be looking for exciting. We’re looking for normal. Thanks!
