This would bring an end to a shameful episode in British history when islanders were forcefully removed from their homes so that the US and UK could set up the secret base on Diego Garcia.

It's not clear if or when the islanders will return.

UK hands sovereignty of Chagos Islands to Mauritius
In a historic move, the UK gives up sovereignty of a strategic group of islands in the Indian Ocean.

I never even knew about the base on Diego Garcia. Where did the islanders go?

Scattered all over the place, with some going to the UK.

The Argentine mafia will now try and compare this case to the Falklands.

    Watch this space.

This appears to have come right out of the blue but it’s certainly a positive step given how we have treated the islanders.

Also, do you recall how we treated the islanders of Montserrat some years ago after their volcanoe blew?

I don’t think we have always been poor custodians of the far flung places we have occupied but damn there are some examples of when we have behaved very bad indeed.

I see David Lammy met his Argentine counterpart in New York the other day.

I wonder what they chatted about?

And now since there will no longer be a British Indian Ocean Territory, all the websites using a domain ending in .io are at risk. According to the rules of how domain names are given to countries.

How a UK treaty could spell the end of the .io domain
Does this mean the end of itch.io and greenhouse.io?
