    He died yesterday and wrote some incredible songs, his voice becoming craggier and smokier over the years. A very handsome fellow, he was also married to Rita Coolidge for a while - a beautiful woman with a voice to match.

    Have to say I didnt think he was that great a singer....much better actor.

    He sounded okay on record. However the BBC showed several clips of him singing live and he was out of tune most of the time.

    He was a very intelligent man and a little shy, going by this Letterman interview. He was also very cool, with that husky voice.

    Known as a great songwriter, even while building his career as a performer. Oxford Rhodes scholar for literature, then the military, and was about to take a position teaching at the West Point academy before a swerve to Nashville.
