One of a kind and to use the old cliché, they broke the mould when she was born. Humour, very private and unmissable in any performance.

Dame Maggie Smith obituary: A piercing presence on stage and screen
One of Britain's best loved performers who was as much at home with comedy as with drama.

Was watching the BBC when the news broke. My missus is a big fan of her works.

In The New York Times today:

“The most intense pleasures of a Maggie Smith performance were seldom caused by loud histrionics. The moments that thrilled admirers of the British actor, who died on Friday at 89, were often the quieter ones — little asides murmured under her breath, telegraphed only by a sly smile or an expressively arched eyebrow.“

Every newspaper in the world must have an obituary for Maggie Smith, but I’m using one of my precious NYT gift articles in order to share this one. It contains such a compendium of her work that I want to start at the beginning and work my way through all of her films.

It really struck me that throughout her life, she could go anywhere she pleased, rarely being recognized, until Downton Abbey, in the twilight of her career. Even the Harry Potter movies didn’t endanger her anonymity on the street, except by the children who recognized her as McGonagall. (One little boy asked “Were you really a cat?”)

Maggie Smith, Grande Dame of Stage and Screen, Dies at 89 (Gift Article)
She earned an extraordinary array of awards, from Oscars to Emmys to a Tony, but she could still go almost everywhere unrecognized. Then came “Downton Abbey.”
