Airport shopping

  • Tomorrow is my farewell day for 2024. I am flying Iberia via Madrid and I will have about 2 hours of layover in Barajas.

By my experience, at 10 PM most shops will be closed and Intercontinental flights to South America are left to a remote terminal (TS4) which is not very furnished with shops even during daytime. My flight will be departing at midnight.

For now, I have booked 4x Jack Daniel's bottles for collection in Ezeiza for 121.60 USD, which is about 113,667 ARS at the official rate, which - in turn - converts back to 84.20 USD at the blue rate, or 21.05 USD per bottle. I hope Shop Duty Free will honor my reservation, since last time it was "just for show" and when I arrived there was none set aside for me, and almost none left on the shelves.

I am wondering if I should do some shopping in Barajas, too. Is airport shopping convenient at all? Did you have find any deal at the airport?

Except for whiskey in Argentina, which is convenient only because insanely priced outside, and luckily falls within the very special circumstances of being able to convert in pesos at the official rate AND duty free, I have never seen any real deal at airports.

The deals in Europe tend not to be as good as the deals in Latam , in my opinion.

The ability to pay in Pesos should swing the advantage to Ezeiza.

We reserved 4 bottles of Gin last week to pick up in Aeroparque and we were able to pick them up with no problem.

Argentina also also gives you an additional allowance for merchandise purchased in Argentine duty free shops.

I didn't know! What would this be?

Last year, the duty free at Ezeiza was assaulted by a crowd of Argentinians shopping for anything imaginable, from body butters to chocolate, alcohol and sweets. Even with advantage of the USD to pesos official rate (for once), they weren't cheap compared to what is available outside. Better quality and first-world brand, and they don't take up space in your checked luggage. This is the only reason why I am shopping for whisky there.

Thanks for sharing the link to Barajas online shoppings - I see they have a pet section. I am wondering if these will get confiscated in Ezeiza, or since they were bought at a duty free they will go through.

  • Vía aérea o marítima:

    • USD 500 en equipaje
    • USD 500 en el free shop de llegada

500 general shopping and 500 in the arrivals duty free shop.

But if you take all the labels and packaging off the stuff in Europe there should be no hassle.

At the end of the day, they are looking for people bringing in 20 i phones and several laptops.
