Another event I used to look forward to watching. Seem to have lost my enthusiasm for it.

It's a busy month what with Copa America, Euros 2024, Wimbledon, UK elections...

    Have I missed anything?

I doubt if I have enough time to watch the Olympics this time around, but probably watch the highlights on the BBC

I will only watch the Athletics , unless there is something outstanding on.

The daughter of a mate from Australia is in the rowing , so I will watch that as well.

This will degrade the conversation somewhat, but I would say that visitors to the Paris Olympics will be glad to see the 400 sanisettes. Gift article.

[And btw, I don’t consider bathroom fees of a euro or a pound sterling to be nominal; is that crazy?]

In the UK train stations charge something like 20 pence to use the toilet and for that fee you can be fairly confident of well maintained and clean facilities.

On mainland Europe that one Euro charge guarantees you nothing more than the ability to relieve yourself in my experience. Facilities are not necessarily great for that Euro.

A bargain. Do they still use coin slots to gain entry?

Yes they do. A quick jump over the turnstile if you're agile! 8o

Dressage star, Charlotte Dujardin has withdrawn from the Olympics for apparently making an error of judgement in a video from four years ago, but does not explain what the video contains. She then says she is ashamed, but how can we even understand if we don't know what she is supposed to have done?

This kind of reporting happens a lot today. Someone has to apologise for something they said or did, but we are never told what. Or, if we are told, it's usually sugar coated or out of context. I don't care about dressage, but I do care about facts.

I don't really understand how horses have a place in games for humans. It seems obvious to me that whenever an animal is put to use (for leisure, work, sport, entertainment) it is not in their best interest.

In my small town, the saint patron's fair calls for a donkey race. Now it is being questioned. at last! Some say it is "tradition", when in reality it is just a few decades long. They had to come up with something to stand out compared to neighboring towns and went for a donkey race. Whenever I saw the donkeys being beaten while scared among the yelling crowd, I could only feel pity and sadness and not a bit of excitement.

I didn't see the video -- it seems everybody would like to see it --- but it is not hard to believe that an animal used for competition, money and prestige will be exploited.

I understand where you're coming from serafina. However most of the events in today's Olympics outside of athletics would have to disappear as well.

There’s a lot of debate about the future of the Olympic Games but not from this perspective. It’s an economic nightmare for hosts and apparently hotel bookings in Paris are nowhere near what they expect. Hence there’s a strong argument to move the games permanently to Athens.

London put on a great games some years ago but I don’t know how the numbers stacked up.

    New word for me. Dressage.

The Argentina Morocco game was ruined by a pitch invasion and in the end Morocco won 2-1 after an Argentina goal was disallowed.

    So much for crowd control.

Crowd trouble forces the first football match of the Olympics to be delayed by almost two hours, with Morocco finally beating Argentina 2-1 in an empty stadium.

That is so awful. Really hard to watch. Too bad the horse didn’t reply with his hooves.

    Poor show.

I'm pretty sure another well known rider was outed by video for similar whip abuse not that long ago.
