Anyone thought about having a gas instead of petrol powered car?

  • Coming back from BA yesterday Horacio the taxi driver stopped at the gas station to fill up. Which surprised me as the car he has was brand new when he purchased it a couple of months ago. I had just assumed it was petrol. So I was asking him how economical nowadays gas was compared to petrol and he said it works out around 50% cheaper. I always knew t was cheaper but thought the price difference had narrowed much more over the years.

My missus said she couldn't be arsed with it as the benefits are mostly for those who drive long distances regularly.

  • Most taxis run on gas and they are a nightmare for those traveling to the airport with suitcases.

I wouldn't personally trade the space for the money, for a variety of reasons:

    1) most works here are made carelessly and I don't trust a local mechanics installing a gas tank under my arse

    2) when driving long distances, it can be hard finding gas stations

    3) we don't use the car that often as to justify the hassle

    4) in case of accident, I consider gas fueled cars a lot more dangerous than petrol fueled ones.

I don't pretend to be right, this is only my reasoning.

  • I'd agree with all your points. I've seen cars here with tanks fitted underneath between the back wheels and wondered if that would be allowed in the UK. Some are old rusting bangers that obviously aren't safe.

  • They have hybrid plugin cars even in Argentina. If I was in the USA I would certainly have bought 2-3 years ago when there were generous federal subsidies that brought the price down to same as other cars. Here in Argentina I am considering or at least researching.

For people in Argentina who commute everyday or drive a taxi I see the benefit of LNG gas. Not for me who uses a car only occasionally.

  • I know nothing about cars and I wear my ignorance about them as a badge of honour.

But I watched a persuasive video about hydrogen-fueled cars some time ago.

    They exist don’t they?
