Milie's flagship reforms are being debated and it's touch and go, with so many politicians worried that their cushy lifestyles will be severely impacted or they are just dogs in mangers.

Big changes in this country are necessary but getting them through is another matter.

The Herald is a known hater of Milei, but the BA Times sites is down.

If it does go through then Argentina may finally have turned the corner.

I was a bit confused by the article, especially this part:

“Their aim is to encourage imports at the expense of local industries, overturn a pension moratorium that has allowed thousands of senior citizens to “

The govt WANTS to “encourage imports at the expense of local industries?” And the govt wants to prevent seniors from retiring?

Or is this just anti-Milei spin?

The aim is to encourage imports of food products where local industries charge excessive prices.

Right now you can buy Brazilian bread in Jumbo that is cheaper than the equivalent from Bimbo , made just down the road.

    Just one example.

I think that is the idea of the platform. Stop protectionist policies by allowing imports of needed products. Over time local industries will grow strong once they can create and compete using the new imported tools and raw supplies.

The riots today in Congreso were shameful, with cars set ablaze and rioters throwing molotovs, bricks and paving stones.

It makes me very sad to see so many people who want to destroy this country.

The people from abroad who watches those images do not realize that those persons are NOT like them. It is part of the leftist narrative abroad, and they are described as oppressed people whose rights are being destroyed by a evil man.

Personally, I don't see anything in Milei which is against women or LGBTQ+. It was absurd that some entities and offices even existed. But this is just my view as a foreigner.

Just like people here expect free education, but I don't come from a country with free education so I don't find it normal.

Saw in the local rag there was a protest here in the main square last night. Talking the usual nonsense that belongs in the last century. At least it was peaceful, allowing the police to have a fag and play with their mobile phones at a safe distance.

I come from a country where education is free - only 3% of the population in Scotland go to fee-paying schools.

University is free in Scotland as well but you have to pass state exams ( not corrected by your own teachers) and get a certain number of points to get in.

Milei also has a good number of women in senior positions in government - the level seems to be a lot higher than the previous crowd.

    Is this specific of Scotland?

A few years ago I was perusing the idea of doing a postgraduate degree or a MA in Translation at a UK institution (remotely) and the tuition was about 3-4x the fee I paid in Italian university. And those were the fees for EU students, pre-Brexit. Now they must be 5-7x.

These were University of Sheffield, The Open University in Milton Keynes, Newcastle University, University of Leeds etc.

It's £9k a year for an undergraduate degree in England. About double that if you're from overseas.
