Spain and Argentina

    Well it looks like Spain are withdrawing their Ambassador from Buenos Aires.

    Milei hasn't exactly been friendly to the Spanish government especially to the wife of the main man who he has accused of corruption.

    Spain are demanding an apology.

    But as far as I can see , Spain started the shouting match. When the transport minister accused Milei of taking illegal drugs.

    It also seems Milei is not to happy with the Spanish government supporting Massa during the election campaign.

    I wonder how this will progress.

    Usual tit for tat squabble. I suspect a large percentage of the Spanish populatiom agree with Milei. My missus still thinks he shouldn't have lowered himself to such a level and kept his mouth shut instead.

    Being walked over only because you come from a poor country and/or because you want something in return, is not a great example to set. That's the kind of beggar-with-hats-in-hand mentality that doesn't fit well with Argentina, but perhaps Spain thinks that of us.

    I think Milei did good to stand up and speak his mind and I wouldn't expect any less from his character. He didn't say any lie, as far as I can see.

    Being on the stand for drug trafficking is not a light accusation, and I believe that to come up and accuse the President's wife of such thing, they must have thought about it carefully and have a valid reason. If I were Spain, I'd be embarrassed about having a President whose wife can be accused of drug trafficking, and then take a 5-day pause to reflect and decide to stay in office. It is exactly the same attitude that Cristina had every time she was accused of something, minus the "I'll think about it" part.

    Also, I don't think that nowadays Argentina owes anything to Spain. If ever, the opposite given the amount of Argentinians that are moving to Spain.

    Yes it would be against his nature not to. Not sure the rest of the world would see it as that though. Hopefully it'll all blow over quickly.

    To my simple my mind it’s quite shocking. But perhaps the Spanish/ Argentine relationship hasn’t enjoyed the “special relationship” kind of status enjoyed between USA/UK.

    How is this viewed by Argentines and Spaniards?

    Most think that he wants to keep Argentine as leaders in the World Insult Championships.

    The Spaniards havent done too badly to be honest but i think Milei will win.

    In Spain the left will defend the President and the right love what Milei is doing.

    Has the presidents wife been up to no good ? No smoke without fire say some ...

    Milei just likes to call out what he sees before him in a way politicians do not. If he thinks someone is corrupt he will say so.

    That’s my take from the outside with insufficient feeling and knowledge really.

    What is the Spanish ambassador like here? Are they high profile/ popular?

    I would think from a Spanish perspective it’s a one of the highest profile ambassador appointments?

    To be honest , we didn't know who it was. Saw her picture in the paper today . I would pass her by in the street.

    whereas the last two UK ambassadors have been active in social media, I cant say that she has.
