What do you know about Edmundo González, Maduro’s challenger?

If Gonzalez can beat Maduro I would definitely be opening a bottle of bubbly, as would many Venezuelans. But let's hope that Maduro doesn't play dirty.

How can there be any hope that Maduro won’t play dirty?

But maybe we can hope that his cheating still won’t win him re-election.

The sanctions must surely be playing a part. It's my understanding that the UN or the US called for democratic elections and in return, Venezuela would see an easing of sanctions.

Wasn’t that deal called off when Maduro jailed the last challenger?

It's my understanding that the UN or the US called for democratic elections and in return, Venezuela would see an easing of sanctions.

I forgot to look this up earlier. According to the April 17 NYT, sanctions are back on.

“When the government of President Nicolás Maduro of Venezuela and his country’s opposition signed an agreement in October to work toward free and fair elections this year, it was seen as a glimmer of hope after years of authoritarian rule and economic free fall.

“The United States, as a sign of good will, temporarily lifted some of the economic sanctions that have crippled the country’s crucial oil industry.

“But six months later, the Maduro government has made several moves that have dimmed the chances of legitimate elections, and a frustrated Biden administration on Wednesday announced that it was letting the sanctions relief expire.”

It looks as if there’s not much interest in news of other South American countries, even with Venezuela’s election looming. In any case, this one raises the most important question.

Yes, there is interest in Venezuela and other S American countries, but perhaps Argentina's problems are more pressing.

Naturally we all hope and pray that Maduro is unseated peacefully and fairly. What more can I say?

Totally agree that Argentina’s problems are naturally more pressing than any other topic. But we’re definitely capable of other discussions as well, e.g., what is going on in surrounding countries, hourly weather reports, football, booze, etc.

With Machado and her people working for and with González, maybe there is a chance that their sheer numbers can overcome Maduro’s cheating.

Let's just hope that Maduro doesn't veto Gonzalez, but one would think that it's a bit late for that, this being only three days before the election.

But in Venezuela, anything can happen. My heart goes out to them.

By the way, don't bother reading the Post's comments on this article. They way off on a tangent, mainly a GOP tangent which has nothing to do with this election./

Thanks for the warning! I usually find the comments following articles and opinions to be very interesting, often bringing new POV to the articles themselves. But the thread can also be easily hijacked by people with an agenda.

Quite a strange decision / you must ask why Maduro will not allow a political ally to watch over the elections?

    Has he something evil planned?
