George Mallory is a local hero to me. He grew up a 30 minute walk from where I grew up albeit with a 64 year difference.

Yes those were the days of real adventurers.

Time spent reading books about these guys is time well spent.

One of my mates from Edinburgh is actually at Everest base camp right now.

Good for him.
I used to read a lot of expedition books about trips to the Himalayas, Andes, Amazon, Antarctica etc. etc. Look where did I ended up.

The Indian subcontinent is a gaping hole in my travel CV that I need to put right. An assault on Everest won't feature in my plans though.
Who amongst you guys have been to India, Pakistan, Nepal, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka...?
UK Man I suspect we have both read many of the same books.

I've never been one for organised group travel so those places on my own would be a step too far for my liking.

I have been to India once, but not climbing anything. Not even elephant (they are broken in by beating them with a stick - horrible stuff)

Indeed.
I've been to China several times but mostly in and around Beijing. God only knows how they treat humans nevermind animals.
