With Passover beginning later today, I was reading about customs and celebrations, as I’m rather ignorant on this topic. I ran across an article that helped me understand the history and innate goodness of the Jewish people. We can all learn from this!

When I was a schoolkid I had several Jewish friends. They used to get some days off school for religious purposes which made me jealous. ^^

When I visited their houses I was amazed at the strange writing on the bottles of juice and biscuits.

They get more days off than Christians do, but there is the Easter build up, which means in effect, its about the same two weeks. Passover used to be around the same time as Easter, but they changed it, because, not my word, they don't want to be associated with chocolate eggs

I didn't imagine there to be much of a Jewish community in Scotland

In Glasgow there must be quite a sizeable Jewish population. This thread got me thinking of the one's I knew. I clearly remember at least six lads and many more Jewish families my mother knew.

No one changed the date. For the similar reasons that Carnival, Easter, Chinese new year, and the many other religious holidays which change every year, is they use a different calendar.

“Both holidays are supposed to fall on, or near, a full moon in the spring. Passover always begins on the 15th day of the Hebrew month of Nisan. Because the Hebrew months are pegged directly to the lunar cycle, the 15th day of Nisan is always a full moon.“…about 15 percent of the time, the two holidays actually occur a month apart.

“Today, the Jewish calendar and the timing of holidays like Passover are set in accordance with the lunar calendar, while most of the rest of the world uses the Gregorian calendar that is based off the sun, said Josh Dorsch, Associate Rabbi at Beth El Synagogue Center in New Rochelle, New York.“

Why is Easter so Early and Passover So Late in 2016?
It all depends on which calendar you use.

On a tangential note, I recently found out that minority religions, such as Judaism and Islam, have additional holidays besides the "official" ones, during which they are exempted from work in Argentina. So, if you are a Jew/Muslim in Argentina, you can work even less days.
