My MacBook Air keeps crashing

aficionado , thanks for the links. I can't find any kernel log in that location, but I did save a log on my own last month (pasted below).

I even went to the Apple reseller in Abasto for assistance, but they wanted me to leave my notebook for 2 days and the Abasto mall is sketchy. The guy didn't see knowledgeable at all.

I do agree about the battery and stuff, but it is two components going offline (notebook and hard disk). Also, the notebook restarts even if the external HD is not connected to it.

It must be said that the electrical wiring in my office is shit, as it was done illegally by the previous owners. lights and appliances all run on the same circuit, and I am not sure there is a proper ground connection. (However, our STR is in a brand new apartment, so that excuse doesn't hold over there).

I have run the First Aid on my computer hard disk and on my external hard disk and no issue was found.

This is the kernel panic message I saved from February:

  • panic: boot task failure: mount-phase-2 - exited

This error logged at the top of that list indicates the reason was when a disk volume is mounting. That is probably the reattach of the external HD. Though it says “boot task” so this log entry could be a second panic when the machine is booting up after the first panic. You should leave the external HD unplugged for a day or more to see if you can get a panic again. Then view the log. Look for more than one panic at that time.

Lots of people searching Google for macOS Sonoma panics OS version: 23C71 panic

I have a few older MBPs. I do not recall ever having any panic issues. Or not recent enough for me to remember. Reset of the NVM is a common thing I know is often suggested.

  • You should leave the external HD unplugged for a day or more to see if you can get a panic again.

It did not crash while the external HD is not connected. Thank you so much for the suggestion.

Now the next question is: is it the HD fault or the external hub?

My Macbook Air has only two USB-C ports - one I need to connect the external monitor, one is used to attach a multi-port hub (with USB, USB-C, HDMI, RJ-45 ports)

The hub has a dedicated USB-C port for the Macbook power cord, and then I have connected the external HD where I do my Time Machine.

  • If you are having power outages and brown-outs that will result in the losing power to usb-c hub which will cause the usb HD to force dismount. I had originally mentioned the power loss of HD as the problem thinking you had a powered external HD, though the new info about the powered hub is the same idea.

The quick forced dismount and remount of a drive volume and the mention of that in the kernel panic message is causing the MacBook to gak out in some way. I suggest you put the USB-c Hub on a UPS battery backup. Though it is strange if you are really having that many power issues in your home, especially now that summer surges should be less. That could mean, as you ask, that maybe the hub is dying. Less likely it is the external HD causing that problem, though the effect of this issue could be damaging to the HD.

You could move your Time Machine to be a NAS ( networked attached storage). Can be expensive or a simple USB HD plugged into many modern routers which have that NAS option.

This is the UPS I recently bought. And a protector de tensionfor the clothes washer machine which also displays the Voltage so we will quickly know when brownouts are occurring. A few pesos extra for the con USB option to allow power monitoring of the UPS from my computer, but each model has con/sin options. I have several UPS, though most important on the internet router and the smart hub (OpenHAB on linux raspberry pi).

Remember you should have redundancy as part of your backup. You should have at least two external HD as TimeMachines. Swap them out and store the other off-site every week/month. Cloud backup is ideal too. I use arq software with my own cloud, though arq has a cloud plan.
