Yesterday marked the start of Javier Milei’s first state visit as president of Argentina. Let’s hope he will make us proud!

President Milei, on his first stop, in Israel, has renewed his campaign promise to move Argentina’s embassy to Jerusalem.

[East Jerusalem was captured from Jordan in the 1967 Arab-Israeli War. As it is generally considered occupied territory, most foreign govts keep their embassies in Tel Aviv, and Palestinians still hope that it will some day be the capital of a Palestinian state.]

Moving the Argentine embassy would be a symbolic and not inexpensive undertaking. Let’s hope he waits until he has started to deal with Argentina’s many financial emergencies before indulging in this whim.

Next stop: Italy, where Milei will meet with the Pope, whom he has called a Filthy Leftist.

My devout Catholic missus can't stand the current Pope either. :D

We’ve noticed that a lot of Argentines we know don’t like him. Some, for reasons of their own; some, because of his Peronist affiliation.

But concerning Milei, and although I recognize his style is more shock than diplomacy, I can’t help wondering exactly how it helps Argentina when he goes out of his way to insult a world leader, whether one from his same country or not.

Maybe the Pope should keep his mouth shut as well on certain matters.

Not sure why the Pope is so Peronist considering that the Kirchners practically ignored him when he was bishop of BA.

Mind you, like the snakes they are/were, they soon changed the tune when he became Pope.

I’ve always wondered the same thing.

The Pope is not on a state visit trying to win friends and support for Argentina. Milei is.

I'm sure the Italian media will be asking him why he said it. ^^

    It’s a fair question.

Milei seems to be multi-faceted, as of course we all are. I much prefer his intelligent-economist side to his kooky-adolescent side, and hope he conducts his state visits with the dignity befitting his office.

We all so want him to succeed!

It seems he's got bigger fish to fry since his omnibus law failed to pass.

    I agree.

I've no idea when he said that but to be fair to him he has toned down the naughty public schoolboy image since being elected. He's become more respectful.

Israeli TV impersonates Milei very well! No idea what they're saying though.

Definitely worth a watch. Or two. The pace of the video is so fast that it kept leaving me behind. About to watch it again.

    Thanks, Sarran1955 . Good find.

In what is being described as a cordial meeting, before which, the Pope had generously waved aside the graphic insults hurled his way by Candidate Milei, President Milei and Pope Francis were said to have found some common ground.

It would be a major triumph for Milei to succeed in getting the Pope to visit his homeland for the first time. Not that I care either way.

It's also worth noting that his meeting with Bergoglio was the longest ever for an Argentine president, outpacing even Albie and Maurice. Cristina of course has a season ticket at the Vatican.

As an aside, popes have always been political animals and were once the most powerful figures in the world. Think Henry VIII ande his break with the Catholic church.

This one however, is the most political of recent times.

Just a practical question about that black leather jacket Milei seems to wear everywhere, even in 35 degree heat: does he ever have it cleaned?

His sister will make sure it gets cleaned! Probably has a spare anyway.

I hope his sister has sensitive olfactory receptors. Wearing leather even once in the summer heat would make it ready for the discard pile.

Thank you for the support!
