This illustrates the importance of an independent judiciary, which Venezuela doesn’t have. (Gift article; no paywall)

Venezuela was such a wonderful country. Everything worked flawlessly when I went in 1990/91. My first trip to South America actually.

What Chavez and now Maduro have done to that previously wonderful country is tragic.

And to say that in Argentina there are educated people who thinks that the reason why Venezuela is what it is is because of the interference of shady capitalism (read: the US)! I almost went into a fight with an Italian friend living in Argentina over this. It seems that many K-sympathizers/supporters are convinced that the Venezuelans who fled Venezuela (to go to Argentina, Chile, the US) did so because they didn't like equality and fair policies.

I offered to have that friend interview the Venezuelans I came across in my life to get first-hand experiences. Whom I have met are educated, well mannered and hard workers who got away from a country where they had no future or, worse, feared for their life and repression against their families.

People think what they want to think, despite clear evidence. That’s how despots get away with all they do.

Crazy. Then again, there's even idiots in the UK who think like that. I've known a few over the years....it's just pure envy.

We are living in a post-fact world. It is disturbing but true.
