  • Nearly two weeks ago, two men set off in a kayak not far from Carilo at about 6 am to go fishing. The kayak was found a few days ago, but they are still missing.

Only yesterday, a young man set off alone in a single seater kayak near Claromeco on the coast and he hasn't returned, so a search is currently underway.

"The police confirmed that this person was sighted on Sunday at 19 o'clock at about 5000 metres out to sea in a straight line to the Dunamar drop-off after 19 o'clock", specified the municipality.

I don't believe in the state restricting people's movements or in living in a nanny state, but tragedies such as these are all too common. A kayak, at least in my opinion, isn't suitable for the kind of maritime conditions found in the South Atlantic due to the changeable weather conditions and local currents. Especially at 5000m from the shore. It can be bad enough in a 35 ft yacht.

My heart goes out to the families.

  • This reminds me of the two Argentines who got lost at sea in Malaga recently. They went out at 7.40 on a surfboard to see the sunrise and drink mate (.......) and never came back, nor were ever found. Rescue search has been called off, too.
