Did Lord Elgin legitimately purchase the sculptures?

or did he bribe the Turks who were in charge at the time?

In any case , should they stay in the British museum or be returned to the Parthenon

If he'd bought them, why does this need to be discussed?

Would anyone return anything they bought back to the shop?

But did he buy them or did he bribe someone to take them with his luggage to the UK?

We will never know for sure what happened, whether Lord Elgin bribed officials to take back to Britain

Even if he bought them, they should be returned to Greece. And that’s just the start of it. Look at the trove of 16th century Flemish masterpieces in the Prado. Not to mention the Temple of Dendur and other treasures in New York’s Metropolitan Museum.

I'm pretty sure he like many others back in those days were up to something.

I can't say visiting museums has ever been top of my list of 'things to do' during my travels around the world especially when you have to pay to get into them. Would far rather spend my money visiting pubs. ^^

Does anyone ask the Americans for treasures/artefacts back ?

UK Man The British Museum, like most museums and galleries in the UK is free and if I may say so, damn good.

Indeed, as are the excellent ones in Glasgow.

I was referring to museums abroad.
