On Monday, Milei, his sister, and Luis Caputo, probable successor to Massa as Minister of the Economy, took a private jet to New York so Milei could visit the grave of Hasidic Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson, a well known Torah scholar. Milei has said that he himself is a Torah scholar and will be converting to Judaism.

Wile in New York, he also secured a meeting with Former US President Clinton and former US Senator Christopher Dodd, advisor to President Biden on the Americas.

Milei then traveled to Washington DC to meet with representatives of the IMF, the US Treasury, and the National Security Council. As he is not yet President of Argentina, the visit was termed “unofficial,” and he did not meet with President Biden.

That's interesting. Carlos Menem was a muslim who had to convert to Roman Catholicism in order to become president as required by the constitution. Has the Roman Catholic condition been dropped from the constitution or is Millei courting yet another controversy?

Maybe you need to be Catholic to become president, but then you can change religions? I’m clueless about this, really.

It was dropped in 1994 , I think

Unbelievable that such a law lasted through the 20th century.

You only have to look at the UK to see a similar situation.

Catholics are still not allowed to acceed to the Monarchy.

It was the same with the UK Prime Minister job as well until fairly recently.

Boris may have converted to catholicism but his spiritual advisor clearly forgot to tell him about the full list of the 10 Commandments

Adultery was not on the list he got and the least we say about lying and corruption the better.

What was the point of his converting anyway? Just to exercise a loophole to be able to marry in the Church?

    Blimey. That's telling me.

I linked to the article to support the proposition that, whilst not technically impossible for a Catholic to be PM, an ancient law made it problematical; and not to talk about Boris Johnson at all.

Sorry - didn’t intentionally hijack the already hijacked thread I started, about Milei’s trip to the USA. One of the enjoyable aspects of this forum is that we have such freedom to explore tangents, in this case, started by Milei’s interest in converting to Judaism.

That morphed into Catholicism vis-a-vis Argentine government, which wandered into UK government vis-a-vis Catholicism. All very interesting, and I don’t mind a bit that my original thread wandered off the path. I liked your linked article and appreciate your adding another dimension to the general discussion.

Thank you for the support!
